ADP RUN Review: Features, Pricing, Pros and Cons
ADP RUN review: Small-business payroll and HR platform with automated taxes, employee self-service, AI-assisted payroll checks.

RUN Powered by ADP covers payroll, payroll tax filing, new-hire reporting, employee self-service, onboarding, reporting, AI-assisted payroll checks, HR tracking and progressively deeper HR support across Essential, Enhanced, Complete and HR Pro. Time, retirement, workers' compensation and health insurance are available as add-ons.
G2 currently rates RUN Powered by ADP 4.7/5 from 6,333 reviews and Capterra 4.6/5 from 1,565 with 4.6 ease of use and 4.5 customer service. Users consistently praise quick payroll and dependable compliance help, but some reviews cite support handoffs, correction workflows and navigation complexity.
ADP clearly publishes four package tiers and feature differences, but every tier still says 'Get pricing' rather than showing a numeric list price. Current promotional offers such as three free months can improve acquisition economics, but buyers need a quote to compare ongoing cost and add-on fees.
RUN connects to ADP Marketplace, payroll/accounting and time/benefits partners and approved APIs. ADP's security program includes SOC 1 Type 2 and SOC 2 Type 2 reports for select products/services, ISO 27001 and ISO 27701 certifications for select services/locations, MFA, federated identity, continuous monitoring and a vulnerability disclosure program.

What is RUN Powered by ADP?
RUN Powered by ADP is ADP's small-business payroll platform, aimed primarily at organizations that want reliable payroll and tax administration without moving into a large enterprise HCM deployment. It combines payroll processing, direct deposit, tax filing, reporting, employee access, onboarding and HR tracking with optional services for time, benefits, retirement and recruiting.
The key buying difference is that ADP is not selling software alone. RUN sits inside a much larger payroll, tax, HR and benefits ecosystem, so businesses can keep adding services as they grow instead of replacing the core payroll provider.
How we researched ADP RUN
This is a research-based review rather than a Toollers hands-on payroll audit. On October 9, 2026, we refreshed ADP's official RUN package comparison, current product page, ADP Marketplace, security documentation and current G2 and Capterra review evidence.
Where ADP describes service guarantees or AI capabilities, this article treats them as vendor-documented claims unless independently verifiable.
Payroll processing
RUN supports payroll from a computer, mobile app or by phone, giving small-business owners several ways to complete payroll. Direct deposit is included, and ADP can also support payroll-check delivery.
This flexibility can be especially useful to owners who do not want an entirely self-service workflow and prefer the option to speak with a payroll professional when a situation becomes unusual.
Payroll tax filing
ADP states that RUN calculates, files, deposits and reconciles payroll taxes. The company also says it responds to certain tax-agency inquiries related to deposits and returns that ADP files.
ADP further says that when it makes a tax-filing error, it pays resulting fines or penalties imposed by taxing authorities, subject to the applicable service terms and the customer's responsibilities.
24/7 payroll support
The current RUN package comparison lists 24/7 payroll customer support across Essential, Enhanced, Complete and HR Pro. This is a meaningful differentiator from payroll products that restrict live support to business hours or reserve premium support for expensive tiers.
Independent reviews are generally positive about access to payroll expertise, though some customers report long handoffs or difficulty resolving non-routine corrections. Buyers should therefore evaluate both availability and escalation quality.
ADP Assist AI
ADP Assist is built into the current RUN package lineup. It includes an AI virtual assistant for payroll and HR questions, a payroll inspector that flags common payroll problems before submission and smart timesheet import for bringing employee hours into RUN.
These functions can reduce repetitive payroll administration, but Toollers has not independently tested the accuracy of the inspector, the quality of AI answers or the reliability of timesheet interpretation.
Reporting and accounting
RUN includes payroll and HR reports plus a general-ledger interface for accounting systems including QuickBooks, Xero, Wave and generic output files. This can reduce manual re-entry after payroll is processed.
Current Capterra feedback is generally positive about routine reporting but more mixed about highly customized analysis. Businesses with unusual job-costing or accounting requirements should test their actual report and export workflow.
Multi-company and multi-jurisdiction payroll
The current package comparison includes multi-company management and multi-jurisdiction payroll. That gives RUN more room to support small businesses with multiple entities or employees working in more than one tax jurisdiction.
Complex local taxes, construction job sites or unusual worker arrangements can still create exceptions, so companies with difficult jurisdiction rules should validate their exact scenario before migration.
Employee access and onboarding
RUN includes employee self-service and new-hire onboarding. Employees can access payroll information and documents directly, reducing the number of routine payroll questions that owners or administrators must answer.
This employee experience is one of the most consistent strengths in independent reviews, particularly among small companies that do not have a dedicated payroll or HR team.
Essential Payroll
Essential is the foundational package for businesses that mainly need payroll, taxes, reporting, onboarding and compliance help. It includes payroll processing, direct deposit, 24/7 payroll support, tax filing, general-ledger interfaces, new-hire reporting, employee access, HR tracking and ADP Assist.
Time and Attendance, Retirement, Workers' Compensation and Health Insurance are available as add-ons rather than being positioned as standard Essential inclusions.
Enhanced Payroll
Enhanced is currently marked Most Popular. It adds State Unemployment Insurance management, check signing and security, job costing, labor-law poster compliance, ZipRecruiter and background checks.
Enhanced is likely to be the most relevant package for small businesses that want payroll plus practical hiring and compliance services but do not yet need the deeper HR help offered by Complete.
Complete Payroll & HR Plus
Complete adds HR HelpDesk, an employee handbook wizard, HR forms and documents, HR training and toolkits and deeper HR tracking.
The package is designed for businesses that need more HR guidance but are not ready to staff a full internal HR department. Its value therefore depends on how much the included advisory support replaces outside HR help.
HR Pro Payroll & HR
HR Pro adds enhanced HR HelpDesk support, an applicant tracking system, a learning management system, enhanced handbook support, sexual-harassment prevention training and legal-assistance services.
It is the broadest current RUN package and pushes the platform further from basic payroll into a bundled small-business HR service model.
W-2, 1099 and contractor handling
ADP's current package comparison says W-2 and 1099 forms are supported across all packages but carry an additional fee. ADP can create, deliver and e-file these forms with the IRS.
RUN also supports independent contractor payments, including contractor-only scenarios. Buyers should ask for year-end form and contractor fees in writing because the official package page does not publish the numeric amounts.
Time, retirement and insurance add-ons
Time and Attendance, Retirement, Workers' Compensation and Health Insurance are available across the package lineup as add-on services.
This flexibility is useful for growing employers, but it means the payroll-package quote is not the same as total cost. Every buyer should separate the core payroll fee from optional workforce and benefits services.
ADP Marketplace and integrations
ADP Marketplace extends RUN with third-party applications for time, benefits, recruiting, accounting and other business processes. RUN is specifically supported as a Marketplace platform.
Third-party products may carry their own subscriptions and implementation requirements, so the presence of an integration in Marketplace should not be interpreted as a no-cost included feature.
Security and compliance
ADP maintains SOC 1 Type 2 and SOC 2 Type 2 reports for select products and services and ISO 27001 and ISO 27701 certifications for select services and locations.
ADP also maintains broader monitoring, identity-security and vulnerability-management programs. Buyers conducting formal security reviews should verify which attestations cover the exact RUN services they are purchasing.
Pricing overview
ADP still does not publish numeric list prices for Essential, Enhanced, Complete or HR Pro. All four packages show Get pricing, which makes a sales quote necessary before cost can be compared accurately.
ADP currently advertises three months of free payroll for eligible new customers. Toollers treats that as a temporary acquisition promotion rather than a stable recurring price.
Current user reviews
G2 currently rates RUN Powered by ADP 4.7 out of 5 from 6,333 reviews. Users frequently praise payroll simplicity, tax handling, employee self-service and access to payroll help.
Capterra currently shows 4.6 out of 5 from 1,566 reviews, with ease of use at 4.6 and customer service at 4.5. Critical reviews most often mention support handoffs, complex corrections, reporting rigidity or transition issues.
Pros and cons
RUN's strongest advantages are ADP's payroll-tax infrastructure, 24/7 payroll support, AI-assisted payroll checks, employee self-service, broad service coverage and the ability to grow into deeper HR services.
Its main weaknesses are quote-only pricing, additional fees for year-end forms and optional services, and the potential for non-routine payroll problems to require more support interaction than a lightweight self-service payroll product.
Who should use ADP RUN?
RUN is best suited to U.S. small businesses that value established payroll-tax expertise, round-the-clock payroll support and the ability to add HR, recruiting, time, retirement and insurance services as they grow.
It is particularly attractive to business owners who want a recognized payroll provider and prefer having specialists available when compliance or tax questions become difficult.
Who should avoid ADP RUN?
Buyers who require transparent list pricing before contacting sales may prefer Gusto. Very small teams seeking the lightest self-service payroll experience may also find RUN broader than necessary.
Companies primarily looking for HR, IT and finance automation may prefer Rippling, while businesses focused on multi-country payroll should consider global payroll platforms such as Deel.
RUN scores highly for features, payroll infrastructure, integrations and trust. Pricing transparency is the largest deduction, followed by the mixed user feedback around support handoffs and correction workflows.
Final verdict
ADP RUN remains one of the strongest service-oriented payroll choices for U.S. small businesses because it combines payroll software with ADP's tax infrastructure, support and broader HR ecosystem.
The tradeoff is commercial opacity. Buyers should treat the quote, add-on schedule, year-end fees and post-promotion recurring cost as part of the product evaluation rather than focusing only on the package names.
