About Device42

Device42 is an IT infrastructure discovery and asset intelligence platform that builds and updates a configuration management database (CMDB) from information gathered across physical devices, virtual machines, network equipment, cloud resources and applications. The product is owned by Freshworks, following its acquisition of Device42, but Device42 continues to have its own product website, documentation, licensing model and integration ecosystem. Its emphasis is comprehensive infrastructure visibility: teams can find devices they did not know were connected, map the relationships between systems, document data center locations and use discovered records when planning migrations or resolving service incidents. This makes Device42 particularly relevant to enterprise IT operations, infrastructure teams, managed service providers and migration planners with complex hybrid environments. The Device42 pricing page says the product is sold through annual subscriptions based on the number of devices. It does not publish a universal starting US dollar price or self-service per-device tier on that page, so buyers should request a sales quote using their counted estate, modules and deployment needs. Some functions are described separately as optional modules, including Application Dependency Mapping (ADM), Business Service Mapping, resource utilization and cloud recommendations, software license management, storage discovery, NetFlow and advanced data center power/thermal views. The precise module bundling should be verified in the contract, especially if a proposed package is labeled a core discovery or ITAM edition. Device42’s vendor release notes advertise a 14-day free trial. A downloadable trial is an evaluation entitlement, not evidence of a permanent free production plan. Device42's discovery capabilities use multiple methods appropriate to target systems, including SNMP for network devices, WMI or WinRM for Windows, SSH for Linux and integrations or API access where available. The product normalizes discovered hardware and software information and can visualize servers, operating systems, storage, service relationships, IP address assignments and endpoints. Scheduled scans update records as infrastructure changes. A built-in CMDB stores configuration items and links between them so service owners can examine what supports an application or could be affected by planned work. Discovery coverage is subject to authentication scope, firewall rules, network reachability, virtual and cloud permissions, and the quality of its reconciliation. Unmanaged assets and connections outside configured collection methods can remain invisible. The vendor also covers infrastructure documentation that ordinary employee laptop trackers may lack. Device42 offers IP address management (IPAM), subnet and address information, and data center infrastructure management (DCIM) views for buildings, rooms, racks, hardware positions, cabling and related capacity. Optional application dependency mapping can infer communication paths and create service topologies useful during change analysis and data center migrations. Resource utilization information and a cloud recommendation engine help teams estimate suitable cloud targets for migration groups. Device42's data normalization service enriches records with vendor and lifecycle details such as end-of-life and end-of-support metadata. Insights+ supplies reports and dashboards; the vendor's InsightsAI feature supports selected natural-language data queries and SQL-assisted reporting. Teams must validate AI-generated queries and returned context before using them in an operational decision. Device42 integrates with third-party ITSM, collaboration and configuration systems. Its official integration catalog lists ServiceNow, Freshservice, Jira Service Management and Jira Assets, Zendesk, Confluence and others. The Freshservice connector can transfer discovered assets and CIs into a service-desk context, and current documentation describes a Device42 Cloud Connector and administrator setup steps. Buying Device42 does not automatically include a Freshservice ITSM subscription, and buying Freshservice does not establish entitlement to every Device42 module. Organizations should test synchronization direction, object mapping, refresh frequency, security controls and connector-region restrictions in a pilot. The published integration documentation names different capabilities and prerequisites by destination. Device42's value is highest when automatically assembled infrastructure records and relationships replace fragile manual CMDB inventories, especially across cloud and data center estates. It is less suitable for a small company whose main requirement is checking out a handful of laptops, because licensing is quote-based and discovery, network access and service mapping need planning. Device42 is also not a replacement for every ticketing, endpoint patching or identity-management function of a full IT operations toolchain. Toollers has reviewed public product documentation, pricing, trial information and the current integration catalog, but has not run a Device42 appliance, benchmarked discovery accuracy or tested a production connector. The editorial score is based on that desk research, and all unquoted commercial terms remain unverified until a current agreement is obtained.

Best for

Enterprise ITAM/CMDB teams, hybrid-cloud operations, data center managers and migration teams requiring continuous discovery and application relationships.

Device42 pros and cons

Pros

  • Multi-method discovery covers complex physical, virtual, network and cloud infrastructure.
  • Built-in CMDB, IPAM and DCIM join asset records with operational topology.
  • Application and business service relationship mapping supports incident and migration planning.
  • Integrations can move discovered CI context into ServiceNow, Freshservice and Jira.
  • Rich infrastructure reporting, lifecycle enrichment and optional InsightsAI support analysis.

Cons

  • −Public starting price is not listed and contract costs depend on device and module scope.
  • −Network discovery access and credential setup can take significant implementation work.
  • −ADM, SLM, NetFlow, storage and advanced views may require separate module entitlements.
  • −It is more complex than a basic equipment checkout or barcode inventory tool.
  • −Device42 infrastructure discovery does not replace ITSM ticketing, RMM patching or endpoint protection.
