About GLPI

GLPI is free and open-source IT asset management (ITAM) and IT service management (ITSM) software supported by Teclib’ and its community. Organizations use it to inventory computers, monitors, printers, network hardware, software and related equipment while running a help desk for service requests, incidents, problems and changes. The same records can link an asset to its owner, location, supplier, contract, warranty, license and service tickets. That combination makes GLPI relevant both to a small IT team tracking equipment and to a service desk that needs technical context when responding to users. The core software can be self-hosted without a license fee, while GLPI Network subscriptions provide publisher support, additional plugins and hosted infrastructure at published prices. The licensing distinction is important. The GLPI Project states that GLPI itself remains completely free and open source under GNU GPL terms. A self-hosted community deployment therefore has no required per-agent subscription to use the open-source code, although the organization pays for its own infrastructure, upgrades, backups, security operations and administrators. The official GLPI pricing page publishes Network Public Cloud at €19 per IT agent per month excluding VAT, starting with one billed agent. It also lists Private Cloud at €21 per IT agent per month excluding VAT, with a minimum of 25 billed agents, and dedicated infrastructure. Free self-hosting is not free managed infrastructure. Paid Cloud charges IT agents, Private Cloud has a 25-agent minimum, and support subscriptions impose asset/agent limits.

Best for

IT help desks and technical operations teams needing an integrated open-source inventory, ticketing, software licensing, contracts and optional professional hosting or support.

GLPI pros and cons

Pros

  • Core GPL-licensed software can be self-hosted without a vendor license fee.
  • IT asset inventory and ticketing share equipment, user and service history.
  • GLPI Agent and community extensions support automated inventory work.
  • Published EUR cloud and professional support plans make licensing models visible.
  • Flexible hosting and plugins let technically capable teams adjust their workflows.

Cons

  • −Community self-hosting requires IT staff for patches, hosting, backups and troubleshooting.
  • −Cloud agent charges and self-hosted support plan allowances are separate from the free core.
  • −Private Cloud has a 25-agent minimum commitment at published rates.
  • −Plugin versions, third-party licensing and upgrade compatibility need governance.
  • −Cloud plan resource and SLA terms should be reviewed, especially for demanding production workloads.
