Microsoft Teams pricing is unusually flexible because Teams can be purchased as a free product, a standalone business or enterprise service, or as part of Microsoft 365. Current U.S. pricing is Teams Free at $0, Teams Essentials at $4/user/month paid yearly, Teams Enterprise at $8.55, Microsoft 365 Business Basic with Teams at $7 and Business Standard with Teams at $14. The July 1, 2026 Microsoft 365 commercial price update increased the Business Basic and Standard bundles but explicitly excluded standalone Teams SKUs.

Quick verdict

Teams Essentials is one of the cheapest mainstream paid collaboration plans at $4/user/month annually and is ideal when the business mainly needs meetings, chat and basic collaboration. Microsoft 365 Business Basic at $7 is often the better overall value because it adds business email, 1 TB storage, SharePoint/OneDrive and web/mobile Office apps. Business Standard at $14 adds desktop Office. Teams Enterprise remains $8.55 for standalone enterprise collaboration. Teams Premium ($10/user/month), Teams Rooms Pro ($40/room/month), Phone and Copilot are separate costs.

How Microsoft Teams pricing works

Teams is not sold through one simple four-tier ladder. Microsoft offers Free, standalone Teams Essentials, standalone Teams Enterprise and multiple Microsoft 365 suites that include Teams.

Add-ons such as Teams Premium, Teams Phone, Rooms and Microsoft 365 Copilot sit on top of eligible base licenses.

The correct plan therefore depends on whether the buyer only needs collaboration or also needs business email, Office apps, cloud storage, telephony, rooms or AI.

Teams Free: $0

Microsoft Teams Free has no subscription cost. It supports group meetings up to 60 minutes and up to 100 participants.

Users receive 5 GB of cloud storage per user plus chat, file sharing, tasks and polling.

Free is suitable for evaluation, community use and very small businesses that do not require business-class administration or longer meetings.

Teams Essentials: $4/user/month yearly

Teams Essentials costs $4 per user/month paid yearly. Microsoft states that the annual subscription auto-renews unless changed.

It raises group meetings to 30 hours and up to 300 participants, provides 10 GB of cloud storage per user and includes recordings, transcripts and business support.

Essentials is the clearest Slack/Zoom-style standalone collaboration purchase in Microsoft's business lineup.

Essentials annual budget examples

Ten Essentials users cost $40 per month equivalent or $480 per year. Fifty users cost $200 per month or $2,400 per year.

One hundred users cost $400 per month or $4,800 per year before taxes and add-ons.

Those figures make Essentials highly competitive with Slack Pro and many dedicated meeting platforms.

Microsoft 365 Business Basic with Teams: $7

Microsoft 365 Business Basic with Teams now costs $7 per user/month paid yearly.

The July 2026 update increased the price from $6. In exchange, the suite combines Teams with business email, 1 TB OneDrive storage, SharePoint and web/mobile Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

For most small businesses that need email and cloud productivity anyway, Business Basic is usually the strongest Microsoft value tier.

Business Basic annual budget examples

Ten users cost $70 per month equivalent or $840 per year. Fifty users cost $350 per month or $4,200 per year.

One hundred users cost $700 per month equivalent or $8,400 annually.

The comparison should be against the total cost of separate email, file storage, office apps and collaboration tools—not only another chat product.

Microsoft 365 Business Standard with Teams: $14

Business Standard with Teams now costs $14/user/month paid yearly after the July 2026 increase from $12.50.

It includes the Business Basic capabilities plus desktop versions of the core Office applications and broader productivity features.

Standard is the better fit when users need installed Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook rather than web/mobile apps only.

Business Standard annual budget examples

Ten users cost $140 per month equivalent or $1,680 per year. Fifty users cost $700 per month or $8,400 per year.

One hundred users cost $1,400 per month or $16,800 per year.

The desktop-app value can justify the uplift over Business Basic for knowledge workers who live in Office every day.

Teams Enterprise: $8.55/user/month yearly

Standalone Teams Enterprise costs $8.55 per user/month paid yearly. It should not be confused with Microsoft 365 E3 or E5.

Teams Enterprise is designed for organizations of any size that want enterprise-grade meetings and collaboration without necessarily buying the full Microsoft 365 enterprise suite.

Current Microsoft material highlights meetings for up to 1,000 participants and enterprise-scale administration.

Teams Premium: $10/user/month

Teams Premium costs $10 per user/month paid yearly and requires an eligible Teams license.

It adds advanced meeting intelligence, personalization and security, including Intelligent Recap-type functionality and stronger controls for sensitive meetings.

Microsoft offers a one-month Teams Premium trial under current U.S. pricing.

Teams Rooms Basic and Pro

Teams Rooms Basic is available at no charge in eligible deployments and is limited to 25 rooms.

Teams Rooms Pro costs $40 per room/month paid yearly and adds enterprise-grade device management, analytics, advanced layouts and room features.

Room hardware is separate and can materially increase the cost of a hybrid-office rollout.

Microsoft 365 Copilot

Microsoft 365 Copilot is a separate AI licensing layer in many configurations. Microsoft's enterprise pricing currently lists Copilot at $30/user/month annually, while business offers and promotions can differ.

Copilot adds work-context AI across Teams and Microsoft 365 apps. It is not part of the $4 Teams Essentials price.

Buyers should separate base collaboration cost from AI cost when comparing Teams with Slack Business+/Enterprise+ or other AI-heavy collaboration suites.

Teams Phone

Teams Phone turns Teams into a cloud-telephony platform. It requires additional licensing and potentially calling plans, Operator Connect or other PSTN arrangements.

Phone pricing should be modeled separately because the final cost depends on region, calling architecture and contact-center requirements.

Organizations replacing a traditional PBX may still save money, but the comparison is broader than a standard Teams seat.

July 2026 Microsoft 365 pricing update

Microsoft's commercial price update took effect July 1, 2026. Business Basic with Teams increased from $6 to $7 and Business Standard with Teams from $12.50 to $14.

Standalone Microsoft Teams SKUs were explicitly excluded from that update, which is why Teams Essentials remains $4.

Existing customers can remain on prior pricing until renewal depending on the applicable agreement and renewal timing.

Free versus Essentials

Free is enough for short meetings and lightweight chat. Essentials is the right upgrade when 60-minute group meetings or 100-participant limits become restrictive.

Essentials also adds more storage, business support, longer meetings and larger groups.

For a small team that does not need Microsoft business email or Office, Essentials is the simplest paid choice.

Essentials versus Business Basic

The difference is only $3/user/month on annual billing. Business Basic adds 1 TB storage, business email, SharePoint and web/mobile Office apps.

If the organization needs even one of those surrounding services, Business Basic can be a much better deal than Essentials.

Teams Essentials is best when the buyer deliberately wants a collaboration-only product.

Business Basic versus Business Standard

Business Standard doubles Business Basic's price from $7 to $14 but adds desktop Office applications and richer productivity capabilities.

For knowledge workers who need full desktop Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook, Standard can reduce the need for separate Office licensing.

Frontline or browser-first workers may not need the upgrade.

Standalone Enterprise versus Microsoft 365 E3/E5

Teams Enterprise at $8.55 is a collaboration SKU. Microsoft 365 E3 and E5 are much broader enterprise productivity, identity, security and compliance suites.

Comparing $8.55 directly with an E3/E5 price is misleading because the scope is different.

Enterprise buyers should map Teams, Office apps, Windows, identity, compliance, security and Copilot requirements before selecting a suite.

Trial availability

Microsoft advertises trials for Teams Essentials and several Microsoft 365 business plans. Teams Premium currently has a one-month trial.

Trial terms can vary by product, region and billing account.

Use the trial to validate meetings, guest access, file collaboration, app integrations and admin policies rather than only testing chat.

Cancellation policy

Microsoft's current business-subscription cancellation guidance depends on billing account type and purchase route.

For Microsoft Customer Agreement billing, a subscription can generally be canceled within seven days after start or renewal for a prorated credit or refund.

After that window, turning off recurring billing usually prevents the next renewal while service continues through the committed term.

Annual subscriptions paid monthly

An annual commitment is not the same as a month-to-month contract. Microsoft states that an annual subscription paid monthly can continue charging each month for the remainder of the committed annual term if cancellation happens outside the eligible window.

This is a common procurement mistake. Buyers should distinguish billing frequency from commitment length.

Choose a monthly-term product where available if flexibility matters more than annual pricing.

Microsoft Teams versus Slack pricing

Slack Pro costs $7.25 per active user/month annually, while Teams Essentials is $4. Teams therefore has the lower standalone paid entry price.

Slack can justify its premium through its channel culture, Slack Connect and app ecosystem, especially in heterogeneous SaaS environments.

Microsoft becomes even more compelling when business email, OneDrive and Office apps are already required.

Microsoft Teams versus Notion pricing

Notion Plus is $10/member/month yearly and Business is $20. Notion is more focused on docs, knowledge, databases and projects than meetings.

Teams is cheaper for pure communication and meetings, while Notion can replace a broader documentation/knowledge stack.

Many organizations use Teams for communication and another workspace for durable knowledge.

Microsoft Teams versus ClickUp pricing

ClickUp Unlimited costs $7/user/month billed yearly and Business costs $12. It bundles tasks, projects, dashboards, docs and Chat.

Teams Essentials is cheaper for communication, but ClickUp can consolidate dedicated project-management software.

The right comparison depends on whether meetings or structured work management is the dominant need.

Microsoft Teams versus monday.com pricing

monday.com Basic is $9/seat/month annually, Standard $12 and Pro $19.

monday.com is built for workflows, boards, timelines and operational visibility. Teams is built for communication, meetings and Microsoft 365 collaboration.

Organizations often use both because they solve different parts of the work stack.

Regional pricing and procurement notes

Microsoft publishes different local-currency prices by market, and taxes such as VAT or GST can be added separately. The U.S. amounts in this article are therefore reference prices rather than universal global rates.

Large organizations may also buy through enterprise agreements, CSP partners or Microsoft sellers instead of self-service checkout. Those channels can change commitment terms, discounts, cancellation rights and the exact bundle available.

For procurement, keep a simple license map showing the base Teams or Microsoft 365 SKU, every add-on, the billing term, renewal date and which users actually need each premium capability. That prevents Teams Premium, Phone, Rooms and Copilot from quietly becoming organization-wide costs when only selected roles need them.

Best value recommendation

Use Free for lightweight use. Choose Essentials if the business only needs professional Teams meetings and collaboration.

Choose Business Basic when business email, 1 TB storage and browser/mobile Office apps are needed; at $7 it is often the best overall SMB value.

Move to Business Standard for desktop Office, Teams Enterprise for enterprise standalone collaboration, and add Premium, Phone, Rooms or Copilot only when their specific capabilities justify the cost.

  • Genuine Free plan
  • Strong $7 Business Basic bundle
  • Transparent Teams Enterprise price
  • Premium/Rooms options are clear
  • Microsoft ecosystem can consolidate multiple tools

Cons

  • Annual commitment can continue billing outside refund window
  • Regional prices/taxes vary

Who should use this

  • Free for light use
  • Essentials for standalone meetings/chat
  • Business Basic for SMB email/storage/collaboration
  • Business Standard for desktop Office
  • Teams Enterprise for enterprise standalone use
  • Premium/Rooms/Phone/Copilot for specialized needs

Who should avoid this

  • Buyers who only compare headline Teams prices without accounting for Office, Phone, Rooms, Copilot and commitment terms

Expert tip

For most small businesses, compare $4 Teams Essentials with $7 Business Basic before buying. The extra $3 buys business email, 1 TB storage, SharePoint/OneDrive and web/mobile Office apps, which can eliminate several separate subscriptions.
