Perplexity Pricing: Free, Pro, Max and Enterprise Plans
Perplexity pricing explained: compare Free, Pro, Max, Education Pro and Enterprise plans, annual billing, usage limits and API costs.

Quick verdict
Key takeaways
- Free is sufficient for occasional cited lookups
- Pro is the main individual upgrade for frequent research and file work
- Max is a specialist tier for heavy Computer and Research use
- Enterprise adds privacy and administration
- API does not come bundled with app plans
Perplexity pricing at a glance
Perplexity has separate subscriptions for individual research, education and organizations. Its published US-dollar list prices are Free $0, Pro $20 billed monthly or $200 annually, and Max $200 billed monthly or $2,000 annually. Education Pro is listed at $10 per month for verified students and educators. Enterprise Pro is $40 monthly or $400 yearly per user, while Enterprise Max is $325 monthly or $3,250 yearly per user.
These are different products as well as different allowances. Paying for an individual plan does not automatically give a company organization management, SSO or a suitable data-processing agreement. Likewise, an Enterprise seat does not pay for the Perplexity API. A buyer should identify the use case and billing category before comparing raw prices. Our amounts come from the current official pricing and help pages, checked November 5, 2026.
| Free | $0/month | Basic cited search and limited advanced use |
|---|---|---|
| Pro individual | $20/month; $200/year | Higher search, model, file and Computer access |
| Max individual | $200/month; $2,000/year | Higher research and Computer limits |
| Education Pro | $10/month with verification | Discounted Pro for eligible education users |
| Enterprise Pro | $40/seat/month; $400/seat/year | Administration, data privacy and collaboration |
| Enterprise Max | $325/seat/month; $3,250/seat/year | Highest enterprise use and governance |
| API Platform | Separate metered billing | Developer Search, Sonar and agent API access |
Free plan: what you can actually do
Free is a useful entry point if you need occasional direct answers with links. Perplexity’s interface emphasizes searching the web and showing numbered citations. The official plan comparison lists three Pro searches per day and one Research query per month for Free accounts. Other capabilities are limited, including file uploads and access to advanced AI models.
I would start here for a researcher preparing a list of sources or a student checking a straightforward definition. It reveals whether you like the answer format and whether the citations lead to credible original pages. However, the experience can become restrictive during a full workday of repeated follow-up searches, file analysis and multiple deep-research reports. Free does not turn Perplexity into an unlimited professional research service.
Pro plan: $20 monthly or $200 yearly
Individual Pro is the conventional paid upgrade. It raises search and file limits, enables access to advanced models, Pro Search, more Research work, Projects, file analysis and selected asset-generation features. Perplexity’s public pricing currently advertises expanded Computer access, top-model choices and premium data sources. The company also describes additional credits in promotional plan displays, but those should not be treated as perpetual entitlements.
At $20 for a month, a one-month trial is easy to budget. A $200 annual commitment works out to roughly $16.67 per month over twelve months, saving $40 against paying $20 for each month of the year. You still pay the annual amount upfront. If the project is short, seasonal or dependent on a new research workflow, a monthly plan could be more economical despite its higher per-month price.
The key complication is usage terminology. Older marketing text sometimes described generous or unlimited Pro searches; the current detailed plan comparison uses weekly limits for Pro Searches, and monthly limits for Research and creation. The exact current quota can vary with the feature and plan. Heavy users should inspect account allowance screens before assuming every paid activity is unlimited.
Max plan: $200 monthly or $2,000 yearly
Max is positioned for users running significantly more demanding projects. According to Perplexity, it extends Research, Create files and apps, advanced models, video-generation access and Computer capability beyond Pro. It also advertises early feature access and stronger support. The current annual advertised rate is about $166.67 per month, but the actual annual charge is $2,000.
The $180 monthly difference versus Pro is large. Max costs ten times the normal Pro monthly fee, and its annual price is also ten times Pro’s annual commitment. I would only recommend evaluating it when an individual can identify a repeated workload that regularly hits Pro’s published usage controls and benefits from higher orchestration or creation limits. An occasional search or weekly newsletter research brief is unlikely to justify the price difference by itself.
Perplexity states that annual Max billing is available through the web app. Buyers upgrading from a mobile-store subscription should follow the account-specific guidance to avoid paying for overlapping subscriptions. Platform checkout can change what renewal and cancellation steps apply.
Education Pro: a discounted student and educator plan
The current official plan guide lists Education Pro at $10 per month after eligibility verification through SheerID. It includes the central Pro offering plus education-oriented features such as Learn Mode and academic research prompts. The discount is designed for verified students and educators, not every business user who does research.
Verification can be completed using eligibility documentation, and users need to redeem the offer on the intended Perplexity account. I would not substitute a university email address alone for the published verification process. If your institution already has a separate group or enterprise agreement, compare both routes. The plan with the lower public price may not be the one with the administration or privacy obligations your organization needs.
Enterprise Pro: $40 monthly or $400 annually per seat
Enterprise Pro adds administrative controls and company-use features to the paid search experience. The official enterprise help center confirms $40 for each seat per month or $400 per seat each year. It includes organization seat management, shared Projects, governed file connectors, dedicated support and stronger contractual privacy. Perplexity states it does not train models on Enterprise customer data.
For ten people, list-price spend is $400 per month on month-to-month seats or $4,000 for annual seats. The per-seat annual equivalent is about $33.33 per month, not the same as a $33.33 month-to-month contract. Budget for staff moving in and out of the organization and for connector governance. Administrators should confirm whether seats can be reassigned and how changes appear on the next invoice.
Nonprofits and eligible education organizations may qualify for a reduced Enterprise Pro offer at $30 monthly or $300 annually per seat, according to Perplexity support. Approval and jurisdiction can matter; do not publish the discount as unconditional or assume it applies to Enterprise Max.
Enterprise Max: $325 monthly or $3,250 annually per seat
Enterprise Max adds higher allowances for intensive Research, Computer, file and app creation, as well as advanced organization controls. It is far more expensive than Enterprise Pro, with a published price of $325 monthly or $3,250 annually per seat. Perplexity documents mixed organizations in which some members hold Enterprise Pro and others hold Enterprise Max seats.
That mixed-seat approach is worth considering. An organization may need a few analysts running large research reports while most employees just search internal knowledge. Giving everyone the higher-priced tier could be unnecessary. Enterprise Max also has specific features and controls that must be assessed against procurement rules, including audit logs, provisioning and retention settings. Those are organizational decisions, not proof that its answers are always more accurate.
How the API is billed
Perplexity’s API Platform is a distinct developer product. The company says individual and Enterprise subscriptions do not include API credits or unlimited API use. Developers buy metered usage separately and can manage projects and keys. API spending therefore depends on the chosen endpoint, tokens, request volume, search usage and published developer rates.
If your team wants an AI-powered website feature, chatbot or research workflow embedded in software, do not budget the consumer Pro subscription as an API license. Estimate expected traffic, average request size, retry behavior, caching and any paid search or reasoning add-ons. Set account limits and review the current developer price page. The pricing guides for the web app and API answer different purchasing questions.
What changes when you pay for higher usage limits?
Perplexity’s current comparison differentiates the number of Pro searches, Research queries, Comet browser assistant actions, file creation tasks and upload sessions. It also differentiates personal file storage, model choice and support. Higher-tier access does not mean each operation is unmetered. Exact limits can be affected by product changes and the type of operation.
A Research query may involve more retrieval and synthesis than a normal answer. Likewise, an agent performing multi-step work consumes resources differently from a quick look-up. Before upgrading, log a normal week of activity: how often do you research, upload files, create deliverables, hit a cap, or need organizational governance? That record will explain the incremental cost better than a generic promise of more powerful AI.
A practical monthly versus annual comparison
The current standard individual Pro prices make annual savings easy to calculate: twelve months at $20 would cost $240, versus $200 paid upfront for a year. For Max, twelve months at $200 would cost $2,400, versus $2,000 annually. Enterprise Pro is $480 across twelve monthly seat charges versus $400 annually. Enterprise Max totals $3,900 in monthly seat charges versus $3,250 yearly.
Those calculations assume a full year, unchanged prices and the same seat count. A three-month pilot is a different question. Three months of Pro costs $60 rather than committing $200 upfront; three months of Max costs $600 rather than $2,000. Organizations should also account for annual procurement approvals, currency conversion, local tax and termination clauses. Price per month is not the same as total contract cost.
Where each tier delivers value
Free fits occasional searches and citation checking. Pro fits analysts, students and independent professionals using Perplexity frequently for information gathering, file analysis and research. Max is for individuals using advanced research, Computer and creation nearly every day. Education Pro is for eligible academic users who would otherwise buy Pro. Enterprise Pro fits teams that need an approved workspace and management controls, while Enterprise Max is for a smaller number of high-intensity professional researchers or technically demanding teams.
These are use-case recommendations, not published performance benchmarks. The cheapest tier that handles the real workload is usually the best first purchase. If you cannot name a task that requires Max limits, do not start there. If your organization will upload confidential files, however, the need for enterprise policies might justify a higher-priced organizational tier even when usage is modest.
Additional costs and purchasing traps
Check whether your account subscribes through the web, Apple or Google billing. Mobile-store plans can have their own renewal flows, and the Max help article warns about overlapping subscriptions during some upgrade paths. Promotional and partner offers may require a payment method and automatically renew at the standard price unless canceled. Education verification may be time-limited.
Also check what happens to saved projects, connected files and exports when a subscription expires. Because Perplexity continues updating its product, a feature advertised for one tier today may change. For annual buyers, record the plan snapshot and effective date in procurement documentation. For API buyers, track variable usage separately from seats.
How Perplexity compares with other research tools on cost
There are alternatives that offer cited web answers, deep research or document work: ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Claude, Microsoft Copilot and Brave Search. Elicit focuses more directly on academic paper processing, while You.com provides developer-facing search and research APIs. Their pricing categories are not identical. A free web search service and a Microsoft 365-integrated enterprise agent should not be presented as equivalent seats.
A fair calculation includes your existing subscriptions. A company already paying for an eligible Microsoft license may value Copilot differently from a freelancer comparing $20 individual research tools. A research lab may benefit more from reproducible academic screening than general web answers. For feature trade-offs see our Perplexity alternatives guide.
Who should buy and who should skip?
I would consider Pro first for a solo user who often checks current sources and wants structured research. Test it for one month against a real list of recurring tasks. I would consider Max only after measuring repeated limit pressure. For teams handling company documents, start the procurement discussion with Enterprise Pro and the institution’s privacy team instead of sharing individual accounts.
Avoid buying because an AI answer looks polished. Citations can point to irrelevant or incorrect passages, and a research summary can still combine facts from incompatible dates. The subscriptions buy access and processing allowances, not guaranteed correctness. If a free plan meets all current needs, keep it until you can describe a concrete value case for upgrading.
Pros
- Pros: useful free cited search
- clear Pro individual option
- annual discounts
- diverse model and file features
- enterprise seat and data controls
Cons
- Cons: Max is expensive
- product limits require checking
- API billed separately
- mobile upgrade and promotion complexity
- citation presence does not guarantee accuracy
Expert tip
Pricing research methodology and final recommendation
I cross-checked the official Perplexity pricing grid with its subscription-plan guide, Max billing help and Enterprise billing FAQ. The figures are list prices in US dollars, not a guarantee of taxes or the exact offer shown in every checkout. No paid account purchase, quota stress test or independent productivity benchmark was performed. A reasonable next step is to verify the live checkout for the selected account and region.
My buying recommendation is straightforward: use Free for occasional cited answers; try individual Pro before Max; verify Education Pro eligibility; and choose Enterprise for organizational data controls and seat administration. Keep developer API budgets separate. An upgrade is justified when it removes a measured bottleneck, not simply because a higher tier exists.
