About 1Password

1Password is a cross-platform password manager for individual and business credentials. A person can create, save and autofill logins, store passkeys, payment details, secure notes and documents, and use organization-owned vaults to share access with coworkers without sending plaintext passwords. The company describes end-to-end encryption using an account password combined with a distinct Secret Key, with authorized devices holding the information needed to decrypt a user's vault. Account onboarding and recovery therefore require deliberate handling: administrators can use approved business recovery paths but cannot simply decrypt any employee's secrets through a vendor support request. Browser extensions, desktop apps and mobile apps cover common operating systems. Business features include shared vault roles, secure links with expiration controls, guest access, credential-health alerts and developer-oriented SSH signing, CLI and tool integrations. The official US pricing page lists Teams Starter Pack at a $24.95 per month-equivalent minimum ($299.40 annually), covering up to ten users. It may display as $2.49/user/month only because the initial ten-seat package is billed as a unit; a one-person team cannot buy just one $2.49 seat under this package. Eleven through twenty users incur $4.99 per additional seat per month-equivalent with annual billing. Business costs $8.99 per person per month-equivalent when billed annually ($107.88 per user/year), with a one-user minimum, and adds broader identity-provider, provisioning, governance and monitoring options. Both products advertise a 14-day free trial without requiring a credit card for signup. The broader 1Password corporate portfolio also contains SaaS/identity/privileged-access products; do not assume those separate products are included with the standard password manager subscription. Vendor support says cancellation of a self-managed paid subscription normally keeps the account active until the paid term ends, then freezes it; previous payments and unused time are not ordinarily refunded. Business contracts managed by a representative require contract specific terms. Adoption requires the user to move passwords, install extensions and learn how vault sharing, device authorization and recovery work; it does not remove the need for phishing-resistant MFA or staff training. G2's exact 1Password review page shows 4.6/5 from about 1,820 reviews. Capterra's 1Password reviews page shows 4.7/5 from 2,129 reviews as of its October snapshot. Toollers has not stored a live secret, performed a recovery, checked tenant settings or run a security audit.

Best for

Small companies sharing account credentials, agencies managing shared logins, IT/security administrators, and developer teams requiring vault policies and SSH/CLI workflows.

1Password pros and cons

Pros

  • Secure account/password storage, passkeys, autofill and shared vaults across major operating systems.
  • Secret Key plus account password adds a distinct secret to the end-to-end encryption architecture.
  • Ten-seat Teams Starter Pack offers a predictable annual minimum and up to ten included members.
  • Business includes stronger identity-provider integration and centralized role/permission management.
  • Guest vaults and expiring share links help share access with external collaborators when configured correctly.
  • Developer SSH/Git signing, CLI and SDK tooling can reduce secrets pasted into engineering workflows.
  • 14-day free business trial and published US prices make a small deployment easy to cost out.
  • Watchtower and admin reporting on eligible tiers surface compromised, weak or reused credentials.

Cons

  • −No ongoing free password manager plan is available for business use; the free access is time limited.
  • −Teams Starter Pack bills a ten-seat minimum even if fewer employees need it.
  • −Users 11–20 on Teams Starter Pack cost extra per seat and the package cannot extend past 20.
  • −Business's $8.99 per-user annual rate adds up for larger organizations.
  • −Identity-provider provisioning and advanced monitoring differ by plan and product; do not infer every portfolio product is bundled.
  • −Secret Key handling, recovery setup, device verification and vault permissions require employee training.
  • −Password autofill behavior can differ across browsers, device controls and unusual websites.
  • −Ordinary self-serve cancellations do not entitle customers to a prorated refund of annual charges.

1Password — frequently asked questions

Is 1Password free?
There is no perpetual free business vault plan. Teams Starter Pack and Business can be evaluated through a 14-day trial, and trial cancellation avoids a subscription charge.
How much is 1Password Teams Starter Pack?
The US package is $24.95/month equivalent, billed $299.40 annually, and covers ten users. It is a ten-seat minimum even when the grid divides it to $2.49/user.
What if my team has 11 to 20 members?
Teams Starter allows up to ten extra seats at $4.99 per person/month equivalent on annual billing. More than twenty members should consider Business.
What does 1Password Business cost?
The published US annual-billing price is $8.99 per user per month equivalent, or $107.88 per user per year; taxes and negotiated enterprise terms can differ.
Does 1Password support passkeys and two-factor authentication?
Yes. Its apps manage passkeys and offer account authentication safeguards. MFA and phishing-resistant authentication remain important for accounts protected by the vault.
What is the 1Password Secret Key?
It is an additional account-specific secret used with the account password in 1Password's encryption design. Store recovery materials securely and follow authorized team recovery steps.
Can coworkers share passwords without showing plaintext?
Team vault permissions and time-limited item sharing support controlled access. Admins should scope collections, guests and exports for least privilege.
Can I get a refund if I cancel 1Password?
For self-managed subscriptions, 1Password generally does not refund prior paid charges or unused time. Trial cancellation prevents billing; representative-managed contracts follow their terms.
