Canvas LMS
Learning management for schools and institutions, with a free Canvas Lite option for individual educators.
Instructure documents foundational courses, assessment, collaboration and analytics, with richer video, engagement and AI capabilities in Plus/Next.
A large G2 pool and sampled 2026 comments favor modular course organization and student access, while some educators describe steep course setup and navigation inconsistencies.
Canvas Lite offers free individual teaching, but Core/Plus/Next require personalized enterprise quotes and potential onboarding or app costs.
Official LTI and integration materials are extensive, but the disclosed 2026 Canvas security breach and Free-for-Teacher retirement require current independent risk review.

Canvas LMS pros and cons
Pros
- Canvas Core covers course modules, assignments, assessments, feedback, course analytics and learner communications in an institution-oriented LMS.
- Plus adds interactive Studio video, Impact engagement tools and higher-level analytics/teaching assistance under the current tier model.
- Canvas Next adds advanced AI administration, data query and learner study tooling subject to institution controls.
- Canvas Lite gives individual teachers a genuinely free route for lessons, grading and student collaboration.
- A large exact-match G2 review base provides substantive educator and administrator reports about modules, course organization and third-party integrations.
Cons
- −Instructure does not publish a straightforward seat price for institutional Core, Plus or Next; procurement and implementation require custom terms.
- −The free Canvas Lite service is for individuals and does not substitute for institution-scale admin, compliance or support capabilities.
- −Instructure permanently retired Free-for-Teacher after a 2026 security incident; migration and security diligence are appropriate for buyers.
- −G2 reviewers describe occasional complexity, inconsistent course layouts, administration effort and varied support quality.
- −Advanced video, analytics and new AI services are tier gated; integrations may require institutional configuration or separate vendor subscriptions.
