Testing methodology
What Manychat is
Manychat is a conversational marketing automation platform built around social and messaging channels. It turns comments, DMs, story replies and other social interactions into automated lead, sales and support conversations.
The current platform supports Instagram, TikTok, Facebook Messenger, Telegram and, on higher plans, WhatsApp, SMS and Email. It also includes a shared Inbox, broadcasts, AI-powered conversations, lead capture, tags, integrations and API workflows.
Who Manychat is best for
Manychat is strongest for creators, ecommerce brands, agencies and social-first businesses whose prospects already interact through Instagram, TikTok, Messenger or WhatsApp.
It is less compelling for companies whose acquisition and customer communication happen primarily through websites, email, phone or a conventional CRM with little social messaging.
Current review evidence
G2 currently rates Manychat 4.5/5 from 165 reviews. Capterra rates it 4.6/5 from 72 reviews, with ease of use at 4.4 and customer service at 4.0.
Positive feedback repeatedly highlights time saved through automation, ease of building social workflows and the ability to respond to comments and DMs at scale. Critical feedback is more likely to mention pricing at higher volume, support delays, connection issues and dependency on Meta or other platform permissions.
The 2026 pricing model
Manychat introduced a new five-plan pricing model on March 2, 2026: Free, Essential, Pro, Business and Advanced.
The model is based on monthly Active Contacts rather than simply total database size. Plan availability can still vary by region and account migration status for customers created before March 2, 2026.
What counts as an Active Contact
An Active Contact is a person who interacts with the business through Manychat during the current billing month, such as sending a DM, commenting on a post, replying to a story or engaging with an automation.
The same person can interact multiple times and still count as one Active Contact for that billing period. Follower count is therefore not the same as billable Active Contacts.
Free plan
Free costs $0 and includes 25 Active Contacts per month. It allows up to two eligible channels selected from Instagram, TikTok, Facebook Messenger and Telegram.
The plan includes one user, one Inbox seat, Manychat branding and up to four live triggers. It is useful for learning the platform and testing small social automations, but the contact and automation limits are intentionally restrictive.
Essential plan
Essential costs $17/month on monthly billing or $14/month on annual billing, with 250 Active Contacts included.
It supports two eligible social channels, unlimited custom automations, lead capture, tags, two users, one Inbox seat, scheduled messages and email support. Manychat branding is removed.
Essential overages
Essential charges $0.10 per additional Active Contact on monthly billing and $0.082 per additional Active Contact on annual billing.
The overage model means a low headline subscription can become meaningfully more expensive when a campaign suddenly generates high engagement.
Pro plan
Pro costs $39/month or $29/month on annual billing and includes 2,500 Active Contacts.
Pro is the first plan designed for larger audiences and multichannel selling. It supports up to three channels selected from Instagram, TikTok, Messenger, WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS and Email.
Pro AI and broadcasts
Pro adds AI-powered conversations, broadcasts and more advanced automation.
Manychat AI can be taught business context and tone so it can answer FAQs, respond to DMs and comments and guide conversations toward business goals. Toollers has not independently benchmarked its accuracy or conversion impact.
Pro WhatsApp, SMS and Email
WhatsApp, SMS and Email become available from Pro under the current model.
This matters because businesses that need WhatsApp automation cannot treat Essential as the true entry plan, even if Essential is cheaper.
Pro overages
Pro charges $0.05 per additional Active Contact on monthly billing and $0.038 on annual billing.
At this tier, overage costs are lower per contact than Essential, but campaign spikes can still change the monthly bill materially.
Business plan
Business costs $99/month or $69/month annually and includes 7,500 Active Contacts.
It supports all eligible channels, five users and three included Inbox seats. The plan is designed for businesses managing messaging as a team rather than as an individual creator workflow.
Business routing and Inbox
Business adds advanced Inbox assignment, lead-routing controls and multichannel team workflows.
These features make the plan relevant to agencies, ecommerce brands and teams that need automated conversations to transition cleanly to human agents.
Business overages
Business charges $0.025 per additional Active Contact monthly and $0.018 annually.
The lower marginal contact price improves economics at scale, but businesses should still compare expected engagement volume against the included 7,500 contacts.
Advanced plan
Advanced costs $199/month or $139/month annually and includes 25,000 Active Contacts.
It supports ten users, five included Inbox seats, unlimited eligible channels and API-based custom workflows. It is Manychat's highest standard self-service tier.
Advanced overages
Advanced overage pricing begins around $0.004 per additional contact monthly or $0.0028 annually, with the effective rate able to decrease at higher usage.
This is a major step down in marginal contact cost compared with lower plans and is designed for high-volume messaging operations.
Trials
Essential and Pro currently offer 14-day free trials.
Business and Advanced do not offer a standard free trial, so buyers at those tiers should rely on demonstrations, smaller-plan validation and detailed volume modeling before committing.
Instagram automation
Instagram remains one of Manychat's strongest use cases. Automations can respond to comments, DMs and story interactions, collect information and move followers into structured journeys.
For creators and brands that already generate meaningful Instagram engagement, this can replace a large amount of manual inbox work.
TikTok automation
Manychat also supports TikTok automation where available and eligible.
The value is similar to Instagram: convert engagement into structured conversations instead of leaving every interaction as an isolated comment or message.
Facebook Messenger and Telegram
Facebook Messenger and Telegram remain supported channels across the current plan family, with connection limits depending on tier.
Businesses with existing communities on those channels can reuse the same automation philosophy, but channel-specific policy rules still apply.
WhatsApp automation
WhatsApp is available from Pro and is a key reason some businesses skip Essential.
Manychat can support WhatsApp automations, broadcasts and human handoff, but WhatsApp messaging charges and Meta policy requirements remain separate from the Manychat subscription.
SMS and Email
SMS and Email are also available from Pro in the new pricing model.
These channels expand Manychat beyond social DMs, but carrier, provider and usage fees can add to total cost. Email sending limits also scale by plan.
Automation builder
Manychat uses a visual automation builder with triggers, conditions, messages, data capture and follow-up steps.
The no-code model is one of the platform's main strengths because marketers can build useful journeys without relying on engineering for every change.
Comment-to-DM workflows
Comment-to-DM is one of Manychat's most recognizable growth workflows. A public comment can trigger a private automated conversation that delivers a lead magnet, product link, qualification sequence or other follow-up.
This is where Manychat differs most clearly from generic email automation or website chat tools.
Lead capture and segmentation
Paid plans support collecting contact information and organizing contacts with tags and other segmentation data.
That allows social engagement to become structured first-party data rather than disappearing inside a platform inbox.
Shared Inbox
Manychat Inbox centralizes live conversations across supported channels.
Higher tiers increase Inbox seats and team controls so automated journeys can hand off to people without forcing staff to work in separate social apps.
Inbox seat costs
Plan-specific Inbox seat limits matter because extra seats can cost more. Pro, Business and Advanced allow extra Inbox seats, while some separate Inbox configurations use a different pricing model.
Teams should count the actual number of people who need to participate in live conversations rather than assuming every account user automatically has the same Inbox access.
CRM and marketing integrations
Manychat integrates with tools such as HubSpot, Google Sheets, Klaviyo, Mailchimp, ActiveCampaign, Kit and other marketing or commerce platforms.
The integration layer is important because social conversations are most valuable when captured leads can enter the broader CRM and lifecycle stack.
Zapier and API
Zapier can connect Manychat with thousands of external apps, while higher tiers also support API and custom-integration workflows.
Advanced teams can therefore use Manychat as the conversational front end while keeping CRM, commerce and reporting systems as systems of record.
Security
Manychat documents a strong security posture including SOC 2 Type II, ISO/IEC 27001:2022, ISO/IEC 42001:2023 and CSA STAR coverage.
It is also an official Meta Business Partner and documents PCI DSS SAQ A compliance for payment-related integrations. These controls strengthen Manychat's enterprise trust story compared with smaller chatbot tools.
AI governance
ISO/IEC 42001:2023 certification is particularly relevant because Manychat now includes AI-powered conversations.
The company says its AI systems are governed through risk assessments, human oversight and formal accountability processes. That does not guarantee every AI response is correct, but it is a meaningful governance signal.
Refund policy
Manychat says first-month cancellations within 30 days of the original plan purchase can be eligible for a refund, subject to policy conditions and support review.
Upgrading later does not reset that 30-day window. Technical issues caused by Manychat can also qualify under the refund policy.
Cancellation and downgrade
Subscriptions can be canceled at any time and remain active until the end of the current billing period.
Active Contact overages incurred before cancellation can still be charged. Monthly downgrades apply at the next monthly cycle, while annual downgrades generally wait for the annual term to end.
Platform dependency
Manychat's greatest product risk is also inherent to its value proposition: it depends on external social and messaging platforms.
Meta, TikTok or channel-policy changes can affect available triggers, permissions and automation behavior. Businesses should document critical flows and monitor platform health rather than treating automation as permanently static.
Who should choose Manychat
Choose Manychat when social engagement is a real acquisition or sales channel and manual DMs are already consuming staff time.
Creators, ecommerce brands, agencies and lead-generation teams can get the most value when comment and DM volume is high enough to justify automation.
Who should avoid Manychat
Avoid Manychat when the business does not rely on supported messaging channels or when a fixed, channel-independent automation platform is more important than social-native triggers.
Businesses that mainly need website support, email lifecycle marketing, full CRM/funnel management or ecommerce email/SMS may be better served by Tidio, ActiveCampaign, HighLevel or Omnisend respectively.
Overall verdict
Manychat is one of the strongest purpose-built tools for converting social engagement into automated conversations and lead capture.
Its strongest advantages are social-native triggers, a mature visual builder, multichannel expansion, AI, integrations and strong security certifications. Its biggest disadvantages are Active Contact overages, channel-message fees, region/account migration complexity and unavoidable dependence on external platform policies.

Additional review decision test 1
A useful buying test is to model one real campaign from trigger to revenue or support outcome. Start with the actual channel where the audience engages, build the automation, add lead capture and follow-up, and include any human handoff or CRM update that happens after the automated step.
Then model the same workflow at expected monthly volume. Count Active Contacts, connected channels, Inbox seats, messaging fees, integrations and staff time. This exposes whether the apparent plan price is the real operating cost.
Finally, test the failure path. Check what happens when a platform connection breaks, a Meta permission changes, an automation hits a policy constraint or a human agent needs to take over. For social automation, reliability across those edge cases matters as much as the visual flow builder.
