About Bitwarden

Bitwarden is an open-source password and passkey manager serving individuals, teams and enterprises. Its applications store credentials, secure notes, payment cards and identities in an encrypted vault that can sync across supported desktop, mobile and browser devices. Password generation, autofill, passkeys, encrypted sharing and Bitwarden Send help users avoid recycling credentials or sending passwords in ordinary chat. The vendor states that vaults use end-to-end, zero-knowledge encryption, and it publishes source code and security assessments; that architecture does not replace choosing a strong master password, activating phishing-resistant two-step login, securing endpoints and promptly removing departed users. For teams, organization-owned vaults, collections, permissions and event logs centralize shared credential management, while directory synchronization and SCIM simplify onboarding. Enterprise adds granular controls, SSO integration, enterprise policy enforcement, eligible self-hosted deployment, account recovery and extra risk-remediation features. Bitwarden's official current US pricing page lists an ongoing Free individual account with unlimited passwords and devices. Personal Premium is $19.80 per year ($1.65 per month equivalent), and Families is $47.88 per year ($3.99/month equivalent) for up to six users. For organizations, Teams costs $4 per user/month equivalent ($48/user/year) and Enterprise costs $6 per user/month equivalent ($72/user/year), each billed annually before tax. Teams and Enterprise advertise 14-day trials; very large organizations can request custom quotes. The free personal plan's one-to-one sharing should not be confused with a fully administered unlimited-user business organization. Enterprise self-hosting requires the customer to maintain server, updates, backups, HTTPS and access security; it is not included in Teams. Bitwarden Secrets Manager, which handles developer and machine-to-machine secrets, is a separately marketed product with its own plans and should not be treated as automatically included. The vendor's Terms of Service state a 30-day refund policy for paid services; its help center explains how to cancel personal and organization subscriptions, and deleting an account alone does not automatically terminate billing. Exact G2 Bitwarden reviews show 4.6/5 from about 1,499 submissions, while the Capterra Bitwarden reviews page shows 4.7/5 from 216. Different sample sizes and review methods mean the ratings should be shown individually. Toollers has not deployed Bitwarden, inspected its source code, run a penetration test or tested credential recovery.

Best for

Individuals managing passwords across devices, lean IT teams adopting shared vaults, businesses automating provisioning, and organizations valuing open-source clients or enterprise self-hosting.

Bitwarden pros and cons

Pros

  • Free individual plan includes unlimited password storage and cross-device access.
  • Open-source code and published external security assessments permit additional scrutiny.
  • Zero-knowledge end-to-end encryption protects vault content from ordinary service-side disclosure.
  • Teams starts at a clear $4/user/month annual equivalent with shared collections and event logs.
  • Enterprise at $6/user/month annual equivalent adds SSO, policy enforcement and self-hosting options.
  • Password and passkey management, browser extensions, desktop apps and mobile apps span common environments.
  • Bitwarden Send supports encrypted controlled file/text sharing, including people without Bitwarden accounts.
  • Directory Connector/SCIM and API/CLI options support organizational lifecycle administration.

Cons

  • −Some reviewers find the interface less polished than competing password managers and report occasional autofill friction.
  • −Teams and Enterprise are annual per-seat commitments; the free account is not a substitute for managed business access.
  • −Self-hosting is Enterprise-only and adds server hardening, patching, backups and uptime responsibility.
  • −Enterprise SSO and granular administration are not fully available at Teams rates.
  • −Bitwarden Secrets Manager is separately billed from the core Password Manager subscription.
  • −Security still depends on strong primary credentials, MFA, device hygiene and revoking stale user access.
  • −Recovery and organization-owner permissions must be designed before a critical admin loses access.
  • −An annual pricing label can be mistaken for a monthly payment plan if buyers do not read billing terms.
