Amplitude vs Matomo comparison cover

Amplitude and Matomo both measure what people do across digital experiences, but their core jobs are different. Amplitude is a product and growth analytics platform designed around behavioral events, retention, journeys, experiments, replay, activation and AI-assisted analysis. Matomo is a privacy-focused web and app analytics platform designed around traffic, campaigns, ecommerce, goals and direct control over analytical data, with the option to operate the software on infrastructure your business controls.

That difference changes the software purchase. A SaaS product team trying to understand why a new workflow produces poor seven-day retention will often prefer Amplitude. A publisher, ecommerce merchant or regulated organization that wants familiar web reports, managed European hosting or an open-source analytics installation may find Matomo more natural. Neither product is universally better just because it offers more features or advertises a free edition.

This comparison uses publicly documented product features and commercial terms checked on October 24, 2026. Amplitude's permanent Free plan includes two million events per month; Plus starts at $0 for the first two million and increases according to the live event-volume estimator. Matomo's On-Premise Community edition has no license fee, while Matomo Cloud charges by monthly tracking hits and adds managed hosting and premium analytics. Growth and Enterprise Amplitude subscriptions and Matomo enterprise packages require commercial scoping.

Our verdict is research-based rather than a claim of hands-on benchmarking. Choose Amplitude if measuring activation, feature adoption and retention—and acting through experimentation or targeted activation—is the main job. Choose Matomo if privacy architecture, first-party website/ecommerce measurement, source access and deployment ownership are non-negotiable. For some digital businesses, the right answer is a clearly governed combination of the two.

Quick verdict

Quick verdict

Amplitude wins for product and growth teams that need event-based funnels, retention, cohorts, journeys, session replay, experimentation, activation and AI in a connected analytics workflow. Free includes 2M events per month and unlimited seats, while Plus includes the first 2M events and then charges by usage. Matomo wins for privacy-oriented website and ecommerce analytics, with a genuinely free open-source self-hosted Community edition and an EU-hosted Cloud service charged by hits. Matomo advanced funnels, heatmaps, recordings and A/B testing depend on Cloud or premium self-hosted entitlements. Neither analytics tool guarantees regulatory compliance; consent and lawful data use require appropriate configuration.

Different analytics philosophies: product growth versus website ownership

Amplitude is organized around users doing things over time. Teams ask who completed onboarding, which accounts adopted a new capability, what behavior predicts upgrading, where an activation sequence breaks and whether an experiment lifted retention. The events are the foundation; dashboards, cohorts, replay, activation and experiments work from that same behavioral model.

Matomo starts from website and application measurement: visitors, sessions, pageviews, acquisition channels, goals, ecommerce orders, campaigns and reports. It can record events, and premium offerings support sophisticated visitor behavior analysis. But its strategic distinction is that organizations can retain control of the software and the data rather than accept an exclusively vendor-operated analytics environment.

A buyer should begin by writing down five decisions they want analytics to improve. If most involve repeated product usage by identifiable accounts, Amplitude has the natural advantage. If most involve site traffic, marketing content, conversions and where the tracking data is stored, Matomo is likely the better first evaluation.

Amplitude pricing: Free, Plus, Growth and Enterprise

Amplitude Free is a perpetual $0 tier without a credit card requirement. The current published quota is two million tracked events per month, with unlimited collaborators. The plan includes product analytics, AI Agents/MCP, limited experimentation and activation capabilities, and ten thousand monthly Session Replays. The inclusion of multiple product families does not mean unlimited usage of each one.

Plus also starts at $0 because the first two million monthly events are free, then scales through Amplitude’s live event-pricing estimator. The current self-service Plus estimator covers volumes up to seventy million events. Plus adds more analytical flexibility such as custom events, formulas, some behavioral cohorts, heatmaps and expanded data access. A credit card is required for the Plus billing flow.

Growth and Enterprise require custom quotes. Growth adds deeper behavioral analysis, monitoring, SSO and project permissions; Enterprise expands role management, data access controls, support and large-scale governance. Replays, agent sessions, streaming and advanced capabilities may have independent allowances or add-on terms, so the platform price alone is not the complete budget.

Matomo pricing: free Community, managed Cloud and premium self-hosted

Matomo On-Premise Community is open-source and free to license, with no software-imposed user or hit limit in its published offer. That price does not cover servers, database storage, backups, upgrades, hardening, support or the staff responsible for keeping the platform reliable. A competent internal operations team can make Community economical; for a team with no infrastructure capacity, the free license can disguise real costs.

Matomo Cloud Business is hosted by Matomo and charged against monthly hit allowances. Toollers’ current U.S. pricing reference reports an entry tier around $26 for 50,000 monthly hits, with higher tiers scaling by tracked volume; the official calculator is currency- and traffic-sensitive and should take priority before purchase. Annual billing advertises two months free. Enterprise needs a tailored quote, particularly above ten million monthly hits.

Matomo also markets paid On-Premise Team, Business, Enterprise and VIP bundles that add premium analytics or support to self-hosted deployments. Those are not the same as the no-fee Community license. An organization planning to run heatmaps, funnels, form analytics, cohorts, A/B tests or specialized reporting should compare the exact bundle or plugin cost, not merely record Matomo as zero dollars.

Why event pricing and hit pricing cannot be compared one-for-one

Amplitude defines an event as an interaction sent under its behavioral event schema, such as sign-up, button activation, feature use, completed purchase or page view. A team decides what to instrument and can use manual tracking or supported autocapture. High-frequency automatic events, duplicate client/server events and chatty interfaces can increase usage materially.

Matomo counts tracking hits, including pageviews, events, downloads, outbound link interactions, on-site searches, content actions and other supported requests. Matomo specifically warns that certain automated assistant or bot tracking requests can count against Cloud quotas. Visits are not equivalent to hits, and hits are not equivalent to unique people.

To compare cost, instrument a representative sample of the same real business workflow and measure both platforms’ activity, rather than plugging a million Amplitude events into a million-hit Matomo tier. Consent behavior, exclusions, bot filtering and what each SDK records will affect both numbers.

Illustrative usage scenario: a new SaaS product

Suppose a SaaS startup records 40,000 monthly active users and each generates an average of three tracked product events per active day over twenty days. That is 2.4 million Amplitude events in a month, not 40,000 billable units. It exceeds the current two-million-event Free allowance and needs a Plus calculator estimate or an approved alternative instrumentation plan.

Matomo could track this application, but its Cloud hit count would depend on the actual web and mobile requests sent: pageviews, interactions, search, downloads and configured events. A shift from only pageviews to detailed feature events could move the hit allowance materially. The two systems’ numerical quotas cannot produce an apples-to-apples price without observed data.

If the main question is which onboarding steps improve users’ week-four retention, Amplitude’s cohort and funnel workflows make the extra analytics modeling effort worthwhile. If the immediate job is owned website acquisition measurement for a small marketing site, Matomo may be sufficient with a much simpler measurement specification.

Illustrative usage scenario: a publisher or ecommerce site

Consider a content business collecting 45,000 tracked pageviews plus 10,000 downloads, outlinks, searches and other action hits in a typical month. The resulting fifty-five thousand Matomo hits would exceed a 50,000-hit Cloud allowance, even though the business had only forty-five thousand pageviews. It should price at the tier matching actual hits rather than buy from pageview totals alone.

For that organization, Matomo’s standard reports on landing pages, referrers, campaigns, goals and ecommerce may answer the most important questions without turning every interaction into an elaborate product taxonomy. Its own hosting option may also support contractual data-governance requirements.

Amplitude could still add value if the publisher sells subscriptions and needs to measure cross-device activation, recurring reader engagement, conversion from a free trial, paid plan adoption or the results of personalization experiments. Paying for both should only happen if a named owner will act on each tool’s insights.

Cost of ownership over twelve months

At two million monthly events or below, Amplitude Free may have a $0 software subscription, assuming the business can live with its feature and quota limits. Plus also begins at $0 at that event threshold, but a company forecasting three, five or ten million events should obtain prices from the live calculator. Growth and Enterprise need written quotes and may have paid add-ons.

Matomo Community’s annual license is $0, but the practical annual cost includes hosting, database administration, security patching, storage, monitoring, backup testing and any premium plugins. For Cloud, multiply the correctly selected regional recurring hit-tier rate by the billing term and add relevant taxes, excess activity and any professional services.

The fair calculation includes engineer hours to implement and maintain tracking, privacy review, data export, training, dashboards and the cost of decisions being delayed by poor instrumentation. Do not conclude that the product with the lower displayed starting price necessarily has the lower economic cost.

Event instrumentation and analytics quality

Amplitude works best when teams establish event names, user properties, group properties and business definitions before rollout. Record critical events such as signup_started, signup_completed, workspace_created, invited_teammate, feature_used and subscription_upgraded. Test server and client duplicate behavior and document how logged-out and logged-in users are linked.

Matomo can begin with a website tracker, CMS integration or Tag Manager configuration, then extend into goals, custom dimensions, ecommerce and event definitions. That can be quicker for ordinary traffic reporting, but it still requires deliberate tagging and quality checks when measuring a funnel, logged-in application or multi-site business.

Neither tool can reconstruct interactions it never collected. Amplitude supports autocapture and query-time transformations for eligible data, but retroactive normalization is not magic backfill for missing historical events. Matomo likewise needs configured tracking and retention of the relevant raw records.

Autocapture and retroactive reporting

Amplitude now markets website autocapture and retroactive data transformation. This matters because a team can collect some interactions early, refine definitions later and use eligible transformations when the event taxonomy changes. It should not be described as a platform where every historical click is automatically available without setup.

Matomo captures conventional web requests and can record custom events through Tag Manager, JavaScript or server-side integrations. Its self-hosted architecture permits deep customization, while premium recordings and heatmaps help analysts inspect visual interactions. But the default Community installation is not equivalent to a universal click-by-click behavioral-autocapture warehouse.

If the team regularly asks unforeseen questions about product behavior, Amplitude’s event-level analysis and supported capture tooling are strong. If the team has a stable reporting framework centered on traffic sources and goal completions, Matomo’s explicit measurement model can be simpler and easier to govern.

Funnel analysis and drop-off measurement

Amplitude’s Funnel Analysis is a core analytical workflow. It can study users moving through event sequences, break results down by properties and connect drop-off patterns to cohorts or session recordings. This is particularly useful for onboarding, checkout, activation, upgrade flows and feature adoption inside a multi-step application.

Matomo has funnel capabilities, but they are part of its premium feature set or included Cloud entitlements rather than a blanket promise for every free self-hosted Community installation. A site operator can investigate goal sequences and ecommerce conversion, yet should confirm whether the required funnel visualization and segmentation are available in the selected deployment.

Amplitude generally wins when funnel questions change every week and analysts need ad hoc exploration. Matomo can fit better when the business tracks a modest number of defined website conversions and the required premium entitlements are included in an affordable deployment.

Retention and lifecycle analysis

Amplitude is specifically designed to measure whether users return after a defined start event, including Return On and Return On or After retention styles. Teams can compare cohorts by acquisition source, onboarding behavior, plan type, platform or feature usage, then identify which initial actions are associated with longer-term product engagement.

Matomo has cohort reporting in its premium analytical offerings and can measure returning visitors. However, its standard web metrics do not automatically answer the same product-lifecycle questions as a user-level, event-based retention study. An analyst should confirm identity design, cohort entitlement and cross-device behavior before calling the outputs equivalent.

For subscription SaaS or a consumer app optimizing monthly retention, Amplitude is usually the better primary system. For a publisher asking how many visits came from newsletters and which pages led to registration, Matomo’s web-oriented reporting may be enough.

Behavioral cohorts and user segmentation

Amplitude lets analysts build cohorts from observed actions and attributes and reuse those audiences in charts, experiments and some activation workflows. Plus currently lists twenty behavioral cohorts, and Growth/Enterprise expand the analytical and access model. The available number and syncing rights are plan-specific, so avoid assuming every cohort destination is free.

Matomo supports user segmentation and can offer cohort reporting through appropriate premium packages. The implementation is more web-analytics oriented, and the depth of reusable cross-channel behavioral audiences is not the same product promise as Amplitude’s connected platform.

A business deciding whether to pay should test whether its priority groups can actually be defined: new activated accounts, returning paid subscribers, repeat purchasers, trial users who encountered friction and recently churned organizations. Different underlying identity models can make ostensibly identical segments diverge.

Journeys, paths and feature adoption

Amplitude provides paths and journeys to examine common event sequences before or after important actions. Product teams can ask which feature is usually tried before a paid conversion, whether support contact predicts churn, or where users go after the first dashboard view. This makes it well suited to product-discovery and growth analysis.

Matomo provides visit logs, visitor flow and premium Users Flow reports alongside website page navigation and goal reports. These are valuable for understanding onsite navigation, but the product is not primarily built around the same deep cross-feature product-journey workflow.

The distinction matters most for complex applications. A news website may chiefly need landing page to subscription flow; a collaborative software app may need to analyze the sequence from inviting coworkers to publishing a shared project and returning a week later.

Session replay and watching real behavior

Amplitude currently includes ten thousand monthly Session Replays on Free and Plus, twenty thousand on Growth and fifty thousand on Enterprise, with options for add-on volume on eligible tiers. The standard raw replay retention is generally thirty days, and extended terms require additional conditions or payment. Replays link to user timelines and charts to explain specific drop-offs.

Matomo Session Recording is a premium feature offered through managed Cloud or appropriate paid On-Premise plugins and bundles. It can show clicks, scrolls, navigation and other visible interactions during a recorded website session. Buyers should validate recording entitlements, quantity, retention, masking and any environment-specific restrictions.

Replays are valuable for qualitative diagnosis, not a replacement for aggregate analytics or a license to collect private content. Both products need sensitive-field masking, permission management, consent assessment and periodic review of what the tracker is actually capturing.

Heatmaps, scrolling and page-level friction

Amplitude’s pricing now lists Heatmaps on Plus and higher tiers. Combined with behavioral events and replay, this can help teams connect aggregate click or scroll behavior with retention and conversions. It is especially useful when a product page or onboarding step is receiving traffic but users cannot find the primary action.

Matomo’s Heatmap Analytics is a premium feature. Matomo Cloud can bundle this into the hosted service while self-hosted customers need an eligible paid entitlement. The product offers visual click, scroll and interaction analysis that web designers and conversion teams can use without rebuilding every report manually.

Neither visual tool explains motivation by itself. Sample sizes, responsive layouts, page changes, consent-restricted audiences and recordings from returning versus new users should be considered before announcing a winning design.

A/B testing and feature experimentation

Amplitude includes feature flags, web and feature experimentation in the wider product platform, with capability and usage limits that vary by plan. When an experiment is tied to consistent behavioral metrics, teams can compare not only immediate clicks but also activation, revenue-related events, engagement and longer-term retention.

Matomo also offers A/B Testing as a premium feature. It can test website changes and measure goal or conversion effects, which makes it suitable for landing page experiments and some ecommerce optimization. It is inaccurate to say Matomo has no experimentation tools; the difference is how centrally experimentation fits the platform and which plan includes it.

Use Amplitude when experiments are part of an ongoing product delivery process involving multiple features, cohorts and activation campaigns. Use Matomo when an integrated, privacy-focused website testing workflow meets the organization’s narrower need. In both, check sample size and assignment before declaring causation.

Activation and moving analytics audiences into campaigns

Amplitude Activation can send selected audiences to supported marketing, customer engagement and other destination systems. The most capable scheduled or real-time connections and audience APIs can require higher tiers or paid additions. This is especially valuable when a team wants to act on a behavioral cohort after discovering it in analytics.

Matomo supports API access, exports, marketing integrations and campaign measurement, but it is not positioned as an equivalent full native product activation suite. A team can combine Matomo with email, CDP or automation systems, yet will typically own more of the connection and audience-definition process.

Choose the system based on the operational handoff. A static analytics report emailed weekly has different needs from a continuously updated audience of accounts that failed onboarding and must enter a targeted support sequence.

AI analytics, MCP and agent-assisted insights

Amplitude currently markets AI Agents and MCP capabilities across its plans, along with AI-assisted analytic workflows and additional agent/session allowances by tier. These features can shorten the distance between questions, charts, interpretations and routine follow-up work. Enterprise security controls and add-on conditions should still be reviewed before connecting sensitive organizational data.

Matomo’s distinguishing published offer remains owned and privacy-oriented web analytics rather than an equivalent wide native AI product-growth suite. Its APIs and self-hosting flexibility allow teams to build their own processing, business intelligence or AI layer, but doing so transfers implementation and security responsibility to them.

Any AI suggestion that a feature caused retention to rise should be treated as a hypothesis until confirmed by a defensible experimental design or additional evidence. AI-generated insights are not a substitute for event quality, consent choices or statistical review.

Campaign acquisition and marketing analytics

Matomo provides conventional website marketing reports for referrals, campaigns, organic search, goals and ecommerce outcomes. Its premium offerings can extend attribution, search keyword reporting, roll-ups and advertising conversion export. This is attractive for content teams whose main questions concern acquisition mix, landing-page engagement and online revenue.

Amplitude has product and web analytics, marketing campaign reporting and paths from acquisition to lifecycle engagement. It is especially valuable when a marketer wants to know not only which channel brought a signup but which channel produced an activated, retained or upgraded user. It should not be assumed to duplicate every ad network’s native bidding integrations.

For marketing measurement, validate UTM handling, conversion definitions, source overwrite rules, attribution windows and consent losses in either system. Analytics reports can disagree with advertising-platform dashboards even when both configurations are technically sound.

Ecommerce analytics and purchase journeys

Matomo natively emphasizes ecommerce reporting, including transactions, product performance, goals and marketing sources. A retail site can connect checkout events with acquisition campaigns and evaluate which landing pages and products turn traffic into revenue. Store integrations and accurate revenue tracking remain implementation-dependent.

Amplitude also supports purchase, cart and other commerce events and can analyze retention after first purchase, repeat buyer behavior, customer paths and experiments. Some advanced cart or behavioral analysis features move to Growth and Enterprise, so an ecommerce buyer should compare the chosen plan rather than assume Free gives every specialized chart.

Choose Matomo when classic ecommerce attribution, traffic and data-control requirements predominate. Choose Amplitude when a retailer operates a complex logged-in app, loyalty product or recurring subscription and expects product teams to continuously analyze user lifecycle and run experiments.

Mobile applications and cross-device analytics

Amplitude’s SDK ecosystem is built for web and mobile applications. Identity resolution and event properties let teams compare how authenticated users move through mobile onboarding, desktop usage and recurring activation. That is useful for apps where product success is defined by repeated user action instead of page visits.

Matomo offers app and mobile tracking options, including SDK and API-based event capture, but the project needs proper configuration and may have different default reports. It should not be described as website-only; it is simply more closely associated with privacy-focused website analytics.

A company with several application clients should validate anonymous-to-authenticated transitions, platform-specific event naming, offline retries and duplicate suppression. Cross-device reports are only as reliable as the identifier strategy and lawful collection practices behind them.

Self-hosting and data ownership

Matomo’s On-Premise edition is a decisive capability for some organizations. The organization can select its infrastructure, hosting region, backup and retention policies, database access and network controls, subject to the software’s technical requirements. That can help meet data-sovereignty or procurement standards that prohibit a standard third-party analytics SaaS.

The corresponding burden is real. Teams must own PHP and database versions, patching, security monitoring, scheduled report archiving, scaling, certificates, backups and restore procedures. The official pricing page currently displays a PHP security advisory, illustrating why self-hosted software still requires attentive maintenance.

Amplitude is a managed service with regional data-residency choices, not a conventional self-hosted open-source product. It can fit organizations whose security teams approve that architecture, but it is not a direct substitute for a policy requiring full operation of the analytics application in a customer-controlled environment.

Cloud data residency and regional privacy controls

Matomo states that its managed Cloud service is hosted in Frankfurt, Germany. Self-hosted customers can select another permitted location and configure access and retention policies according to their own legal and operational requirements. However, buying a European service does not by itself satisfy every GDPR or ePrivacy obligation.

Amplitude publishes U.S. and EU AWS data center options and describes European processing options for its AI features when an organization is provisioned in the EU region. The actual residency, cross-border subprocessors, data processing agreement and available plan features should be confirmed with the vendor for the specific account.

A procurement review should map collection location, transport, backups, support access, processing by third parties, deletion requests and the legal relationship among the controller, processor and subprocessors. A simple privacy badge is not an adequate technical or legal assessment.

Matomo offers consent support, privacy settings, IP anonymization and other controls that can help build a more privacy-respecting analytics implementation. Matomo’s own guidance explains that whether analytics can run without prior consent depends on national laws, actual tracking configuration and narrow exemptions. Some jurisdictions require consent even for first-party cookieless analytics.

Amplitude provides DPA terms, deletion tooling, data-residency choices and event/replay privacy settings. It can be implemented responsibly, but hosted product behavior collection and session replay can introduce additional data-processing and consent questions, particularly when a product captures logged-in journeys.

For either system, minimize identifiers, block sensitive fields, define lawful basis and retention, evaluate local ePrivacy rules, document third-party processors and test consent signals. No vendor marketing statement should be presented as a guarantee of GDPR compliance for the customer’s actual use.

Data retention, access windows and deletion

Amplitude currently lists one year of data access on Free and two years on Plus, with broader access on the higher tiers, while replay data commonly has a thirty-day base retention policy. These are distinct data classes; recording retention and event chart availability should not be conflated. Extended replay retention, exports and deletion capabilities have their own terms.

Matomo’s self-hosting model enables customer-defined retention and access policies, but it also creates responsibility for timely deletion, backups and data protection. Cloud customers depend on contractual storage and data-retention allowances; particular raw-data and report-retention durations should be verified against the current Cloud package.

During vendor selection, specify how long you need raw events, aggregated reports, visitor-level records and replay media. Then test how deletion requests propagate through reports, exports, backups and downstream integrations before declaring one system more privacy-compliant than the other.

Data export, APIs and integrations

Amplitude supports SDK ingestion, destination connections, APIs and integrations with CDPs, warehouses, messaging tools and analytics workflows. The current platform connects analytics to activation, while more advanced streams, external audience APIs and additional volume can be gated by plan or add-on. A data team should validate the connector types and billing terms it actually needs.

Matomo provides tracking and reporting APIs, Tag Manager, plugins, CMS integrations and ecommerce connectors. With On-Premise, a technical team also has more direct access to its own analytical storage environment, within the supported deployment model. That can be valuable for custom reporting and regulatory data-flow review.

Build a pipeline diagram before purchase. Identify which system owns identity, web attribution, purchases, subscription billing and product behavior, and where exports must go. The right platform is the one that produces reliable decisions with manageable integration maintenance.

Security, permissions and organizational governance

Amplitude’s Enterprise offer emphasizes role-based access controls, data access controls, advanced user management and expanded support. Growth includes SSO and project permissions, while lower tiers have lighter controls. Amplitude also publishes SOC 2 and ISO-related security documentation for managed processing and AI services.

Matomo On-Premise administrators can apply their infrastructure, access, patching and database rules, while Matomo premium bundles include additional governance or support capabilities. Cloud reduces infrastructure management, but businesses still need to configure user rights, consent, data masking and exports carefully.

For either vendor, review who can see individual user profiles or replay sessions, who can administer tracking tags, whether SSO or audit logs are mandatory and how access is revoked when an employee leaves. A free analytics subscription may be operationally unsuitable if enterprise access controls are non-negotiable.

Reliability, sampling and measurement gaps

Matomo emphasizes unsampled reporting of data actually collected. That can be valuable for accurate breakdowns, particularly when an organization controls its deployment. Nevertheless, tracking prevention, unobserved sessions, rejected consent and invalid bot traffic can cause missing or misleading measurements even when queries are unsampled.

Amplitude’s event analytics also depends on the quality of ingested activity. Autocapture may create noisy events; manual instrumentation may omit critical states; identity merges and server/client duplicates can distort counts. Its product-depth advantage disappears when no one owns event taxonomy and validation.

Use checks against backend orders, signups and billing records as a reality test. For both tools, preserve a production-versus-staging separation, configure alerts for broken trackers and establish documented event and goal definitions so a release does not silently change KPI denominators.

Ease of setup and team learning curve

Matomo Cloud and established CMS plugins can simplify the first day of website analytics. A marketing owner may quickly obtain channel, landing page, goal and ecommerce reports. On-Premise is more involved: it requires a configured server environment, scheduled maintenance and analytics administration.

Amplitude is hosted, so infrastructure setup is relatively simple, but getting meaningful product analytics requires tracking design, events, identity, user attributes and collaboration between engineering, product and data teams. Its extensive charts, experiments and AI can be useful only when people understand the underlying metrics.

For a small marketing team with no product analyst, Matomo may have the shorter learning curve. For a startup that already has an instrumentation plan and a dedicated growth team, Amplitude’s focused product workflow often repays the initial setup effort.

Scenario: early-stage B2B SaaS startup

A founder wants to understand how many newly signed-up workspaces invite a colleague, complete a first successful project and return seven days later. Those are sequential user and account events, not merely pageviews. Amplitude’s funnels, cohorts and retention charts closely match the questions, and its Free plan provides useful headroom while volumes remain below two million events monthly.

Matomo can track signup pages, lead sources, goals and selected application actions, and its EU-hosting choices may help with enterprise customer requirements. But the startup would need to build more custom reporting to reproduce a sophisticated user-lifecycle workflow and might need premium modules for funnels or cohorts.

Recommendation: start with Amplitude as the core product system, and consider Matomo for the public marketing site only if its reporting and data-residency advantage justify the additional implementation.

Scenario: content publisher with privacy requirements

A publisher needs source-of-traffic reports, article engagement, newsletter signup goals, high-performing categories and stable historical trend reporting. Its legal team wants control over consent behavior and storage location. Matomo is naturally aligned with those requests, especially if the publisher already operates managed servers or prefers EU Cloud.

Amplitude can analyze article-level events and the behavior of registered subscribers, but the additional product-oriented schema, replay, experiments and event charges may not improve the publisher’s core editorial decisions. The team should not buy a broader growth suite merely to recreate ordinary content reports.

Recommendation: favor Matomo for the primary website analytics layer. Add Amplitude later only if the publisher develops a subscription app with deep engagement, activation and retention questions.

Scenario: ecommerce store expanding into loyalty and membership

A store first needs to report traffic, revenue, campaigns, landing pages and checkout completion. Matomo Cloud or an appropriately configured self-hosted installation can do this while providing strong data-control options. Purchase values and refunds must still be checked against the store’s actual order system.

Once the store launches a membership program, recurring purchases, wish lists, rewards, a mobile app and personalization experiments, Amplitude’s lifecycle analytics become more relevant. Product teams can measure the feature behaviors associated with second purchases or upgraded membership and test different experiences.

Recommendation: Matomo can remain the website reporting system; Amplitude is worth piloting for member lifecycle and experiment analytics when the team has distinct product decisions to make.

Scenario: regulated European organization

A financial, public-sector or regulated organization may have hard requirements for processing location, contractual oversight, self-hosted deployment, support access, retention and auditable configuration. Matomo On-Premise can satisfy an infrastructure-control requirement that managed SaaS products cannot, provided the organization is prepared to operate the platform securely.

Amplitude offers EU residency, certifications and contractual controls that may be entirely acceptable for a given organization. However, procurement should verify the exact EU provisioning of analytics, replay and AI features rather than assume all data remains in the same region by default.

Recommendation: begin from written security and legal requirements. If customer-controlled hosting is mandatory, Matomo has a structural advantage; otherwise run a functional pilot of both within an approved privacy configuration.

Scenario: mature product organization running weekly experiments

A mature app team frequently investigates activation, funnel drop-off, feature adoption and experiment outcomes. It needs behavioral audiences and a way to move findings into feature flags, guides or activation campaigns. Amplitude’s combination of product analysis, experiments, replay, AI and activation gives the team a relatively coherent working environment.

Matomo can support website A/B tests and advanced behavior analysis with the right paid features, but the organization would be choosing a web-analytics and ownership platform as the center of a broader product-growth process. That may create extra integration work and reduce day-to-day analyst flexibility.

Recommendation: favor Amplitude Growth or Enterprise after testing permissions, event volume, experiment throughput and integration add-ons. Keep Matomo in the shortlist where hosting policy or first-party website reporting is a separate strategic requirement.

When using both Amplitude and Matomo makes sense

Using both is defensible if they have clearly different jobs. Matomo can be the source for public-site acquisition, campaign content and ecommerce attribution, while Amplitude can measure signed-in product adoption, feature engagement, retention and experiments. Separate tools can reduce compromises when each team has different data requirements.

Dual implementation creates costs and reconciliation work. Browser blocking, consent, user identity, time zones, session definitions, currency conversion and event taxonomy can generate contradictory headline numbers. Analysts should avoid merging values such as visits, users, monthly active users and events without a defined mapping.

A useful operating model names one tool as the source of truth for each KPI and documents cross-tool boundaries. For example, Matomo owns anonymous website visit reporting while Amplitude owns registered user activation; the finance database owns actual booked revenue.

How to evaluate both platforms in a structured pilot

Start with five decisions: the onboarding conversion rate, the most valuable feature, first-to-second purchase behavior, acquisition-channel quality and a privacy-sensitive tracking requirement. List the exact events or goals required, how users will be identified and which reports stakeholders will review. Do not start from the vendor dashboards.

Run the same limited, consent-approved traffic through a proof of concept. Check event accuracy, reconciliation with backend data, expected monthly events or hits, session-replay privacy behavior, selected report features, required user access and actual support responses. For Matomo On-Premise, include a documented backup and restoration test.

Finally calculate a twelve-month budget with implementation time, license or cloud charges, premium modules, support and maintenance. Ask an analyst and a business stakeholder to independently produce a meaningful decision from each system. This is a proposed buyer evaluation method, not a claim that Toollers performed the tests.

Migration from another analytics platform

Moving to Amplitude requires an event and identity mapping. Web pageviews do not magically become a complete history of account activation. Historical imports, supported destinations and transformation tools should be evaluated for the actual data source, and analysts should accept that definitions may change at cutover.

Moving to Matomo requires a deployment decision first: Cloud or On-Premise. Then migrate web tags, goals, campaigns, ecommerce events, user rights and privacy controls. Matomo documents ways to move its own data between Cloud and On-Premise, but not every external analytics service can transfer all underlying historical visitor journeys.

Operate old and new systems in parallel long enough to understand differences in attribution, consent and event definitions. Keep a signed-off migration checklist and avoid claiming comparability until finance and product owners approve the reconciliations.

Pros and cons of Amplitude

Advantages: permanent two-million-event Free tier; unlimited seats; strong funnels, retention and cohorts; web/mobile SDK support; integrated experimentation and feature flags; Session Replay included with tiered quotas; AI Agents and MCP; and a coherent path from behavioral insight to activation.

Tradeoffs: usage-based pricing becomes less predictable as event volume grows; Growth and Enterprise require quotes; replay, activation and other advanced features can be limited or add-on priced; instrumentation and identity work require technical rigor; and self-hosted deployment is not a standard purchase option.

Amplitude is most convincing when a team has a recurring cadence of product decisions and the engineering capacity to keep its event model consistent.

Pros and cons of Matomo

Advantages: free open-source core software; customer-controlled hosting choice; strong website and ecommerce reports; privacy and consent configuration; data-ownership positioning; EU Cloud option; APIs, Tag Manager and a mature plugin ecosystem; and premium heatmap, replay, funnel and testing options.

Tradeoffs: Community is not a free fully managed service; infrastructure and security are customer responsibilities; advanced On-Premise features can require expensive paid plugins or bundles; Cloud prices increase with hit volume; and behavioral activation or integrated product-experiment workflows are less central than in Amplitude.

Matomo is most convincing when the organization values owned website analytics and can evaluate the true managed or self-hosted operating cost.

Which is better for small businesses?

A small company with a marketing website, newsletter and basic purchase flow may get more relevant immediate value from Matomo, especially when privacy, ownership and campaign measurement matter. A small team with no server expertise should compare managed Cloud against the real operational cost of Community rather than choosing self-hosted by default.

A small software startup with logged-in users, feature adoption questions and recurring experimentation may find Amplitude’s permanent Free tier a better initial investment. Two million tracked events can be a meaningful allowance, provided the team keeps instrumentation focused and does not let unnecessary autocapture exhaust its quota.

The difference is the type of business rather than employee count. A ten-person SaaS company can need more product analytics than a hundred-person publisher; a small regulated association can have stricter hosting requirements than a global consumer app.

Which is better for midmarket and enterprise teams?

Amplitude Growth and Enterprise are designed for more complex collaboration, advanced analysis, monitoring, SSO, permissions, controlled access and larger data volumes. They are suited to organizations where several product teams need reliable shared cohorts, experiments, replay and downstream activation.

Matomo premium Cloud or self-hosted enterprise offerings are relevant when there are many sites, large hit volumes, special privacy requirements, dedicated support needs and enterprise website reporting. The self-hosted approach can be compelling where operating the analytics infrastructure directly is an explicit governance requirement.

In both cases, request written details on hosting, data access, support, SLAs, privacy agreements, product entitlements, migration and total subscription cost. Enterprise purchasing should be based on the proposed configuration, not the most attractive marketing capability across all tiers.

Final recommendation: choose by the decision you need to make

Choose Amplitude if the business runs a digital product and cares most about why users adopt features, where onboarding stalls, whether accounts return, how experiments change engagement and how to activate behavioral audiences. The native analytics-to-experiment workflow is its strongest competitive case, not merely its event allowance.

Choose Matomo if the business is website-first or must prioritize privacy, data ownership, EU hosting or running an open-source analytics system on its own infrastructure. The right Matomo subscription depends on whether Community core features are enough or paid funnels, recordings and premium support are necessary.

The better product is the one your team can implement lawfully, maintain accurately and use repeatedly to improve decisions. Do not compare monthly active users with hits, treat all premium features as free, or represent a marketing promise of privacy as a legal conclusion.

Frequently asked questions

Is Amplitude or Matomo better for product analytics?

Amplitude usually wins for SaaS and app product analytics because funnels, retention, cohorts, journeys, experiments and activation are central to its platform. Matomo can track events and offers premium behavior tools, but its core proposition is web analytics and data control.

Is Amplitude free in 2026?

Yes. Amplitude Free is permanent and includes two million monthly events, unlimited seats, ten thousand monthly session replays and limited access to additional analytics, AI and experimentation features. Plus also starts at $0 for the first two million events, then scales with usage.

Can I use Matomo for free?

Yes. Matomo On-Premise Community is open-source and free to license, with no published user/hit cap. You pay for your own infrastructure and maintenance, and advanced premium plugins or support bundles may be billed separately.

How much does Matomo Cloud cost?

Matomo Cloud Business charges by tracked monthly hits. Toollers’ current U.S. reference is approximately $26 per month for 50,000 hits, but the official regional pricing calculator and checkout are authoritative. Annual billing discounts and enterprise quotes have separate terms.

Are Matomo hits the same as Amplitude events?

No. Amplitude events are tracked behaviors defined by its analytics schema. Matomo hits include pageviews, events, downloads, searches, outlinks and other tracking requests. Counts and billing allowances are not interchangeable.

Can Amplitude be self-hosted?

Amplitude is principally a managed SaaS platform with US and EU data-residency choices, not a standard customer self-hosted open-source deployment. Matomo offers open-source On-Premise hosting.

Which is better for GDPR and privacy?

Matomo has an architectural advantage where customer-operated hosting and direct data ownership are required. Amplitude offers privacy controls, contractual safeguards and EU residency. Neither automatically makes a deployment GDPR- or ePrivacy-compliant; consent and configuration depend on jurisdiction.

Does Matomo have funnels, replay, heatmaps and A/B testing?

Yes, these are available as premium Matomo capabilities through eligible Cloud subscriptions or paid On-Premise plugins and bundles. Do not assume all of them are included with the free Community installation.

How many Session Replays does Amplitude include?

The current pricing page lists ten thousand per month on Free and Plus, twenty thousand on Growth and fifty thousand on Enterprise, with plan-specific add-ons or additional volume options. Confirm the current contract and retention limits.

Which is better for ecommerce?

Matomo is often better for conventional store traffic, ecommerce revenue, campaigns and privacy-first data control. Amplitude is stronger when the store has a complex logged-in app, loyalty program, repeat-purchase lifecycle or frequent product experiments.

Can Matomo replace Amplitude for SaaS retention analysis?

It can capture events and provide premium cohort or funnel reporting, but reproducing Amplitude’s product lifecycle analysis, behavioral activation, experimentation and connected growth workflows may require additional setup or tools.

Should I use both Amplitude and Matomo?

Potentially. Matomo can own first-party website and ecommerce measurement while Amplitude owns signed-in product adoption, retention and experiments. Assign KPI ownership, configure privacy consistently and expect the numbers to differ due to identity and data-collection methods.
