Gist vs LiveChat comparison cover

Gist and LiveChat both help businesses respond to visitors, qualify prospects and handle customer conversations. But Gist combines support and lifecycle marketing in one customer-data environment, whereas LiveChat has historically concentrated on purpose-built human-agent conversations and chat operations. A fair purchase decision should compare the work each business needs to accomplish, the number of support agents, the size of its marketing database and the surrounding software stack—not simply which chat widget costs less.

The pricing gap is deceptively complicated. Gist currently lists a permanent Support Free tier for two support seats, Support Professional at $29 per month with five support seats, Marketing Professional from $19 per month for 1,000 contacts and a combined All-in-One Professional tier from $48 per month with five support seats and 1,000 contacts. Premium support and bundles are displayed with time-sensitive promotional pricing; they should not be budgeted as permanent discounts. Established LiveChat documentation lists Starter at $19, Team at $49 and Business at $79 per active agent per month on annual billing. Those are two very different ways of buying: bundled support seats versus individually licensed agents.

There is also a crucial October 2026 product-identity wrinkle. LiveChat.com now prominently markets a newer product called Text, whose current Essential, Growth and Enterprise plans have a different feature mix, AI-resolution allowances and costs. The vendor explicitly says existing LiveChat plans remain separate and Text capabilities are not automatically included in legacy LiveChat subscriptions. This article therefore compares the established LiveChat product as catalogued by Toollers, and shows the newer Text offer separately where it affects a prospective buyer. Treating all three plan families as one would produce misleading AI and ticketing claims.

This is a research-based editorial comparison using vendor pages and live Toollers product profiles checked October 24, 2026. We have not logged into paid accounts, measured real-world response times, tested chatbot deflection or audited security controls. Vendor specifications, live checkout entitlements and contract terms must be validated for your business before purchasing.

Quick verdict

Quick verdict

Choose Gist when you want customer conversations, knowledge base, lead forms, contact profiles, marketing emails, workflows, meetings and onboarding features in one coordinated platform. Its Support Free tier has 2 seats; Support Professional is $29/month for 5 seats; All-in-One Professional starts at $48/month for 1,000 contacts and 5 support seats. Choose established LiveChat for focused human-agent chat workflows, a mature operator interface, routing, performance reporting and integrations, especially if your CRM/email platform is already in place. Legacy LiveChat yearly rates start at $19 per agent/month for Starter, $49 Team and $79 Business. New buyers must separately assess the vendor’s newer Text Essential $19 and Growth $79 per-user/month annual plans, which are not the same legacy LiveChat subscription.

The most important difference: platform scope

Gist is designed to keep marketing, sales communication and support activities close to the same contact record. A visitor might complete a popup, join an email segment, receive a welcome sequence, chat with an agent, read a knowledge-base article and schedule a meeting. The same system can provide context for those actions, reducing manual transfers between a separate email service provider and a live-chat desk.

LiveChat is optimized around conversations. Teams can make agents available, respond in the widget, use canned messages, track activity, route chats and measure the volume and outcomes of real-time support. If an organization already has a capable CRM, email marketing service and help desk, buying a broader platform just to replace chat may create duplicate systems rather than simplify operations.

Neither approach wins in every company. A tiny founder-led SaaS may value having all of the communication functions under one roof; an established ecommerce support team may care more about agent supervision, specialized integrations, response-time reports and staffing.

A major 2026 caveat: LiveChat and Text are not identical

The domain livechat.com now presents Text, the vendor’s newer live-chat and AI-agent offering, as its primary purchase path. Its current price table lists Essential at $19 per user per month billed annually, Growth at $79 and Enterprise by quote. Essential bundles an inbox, ticketing, AI Copilot, one AI Agent and ten AI resolutions per month. Growth includes higher usage limits and management functionality.

The vendor explicitly states those Text-specific features, including AI-resolution allowances, do not automatically transfer to legacy LiveChat subscriptions. Existing LiveChat customers retain their former subscription and login. To move to Text, the buyer must select the separate offer and check migration terms. That means an article saying “LiveChat Starter includes 10 AI resolutions” would be wrong without clarifying that the offer actually concerns Text Essential.

This comparison maintains the long-standing Toollers LiveChat product identity for parity with its existing review and pricing page, while pointing readers to the new Text offer as an alternative commercial path. Before signing up, inspect the exact product name at checkout and ask support which platform is being licensed.

Gist pricing: support, marketing or the all-in-one bundle

Gist publishes three related subscriptions rather than one single uniform price list: Support, Marketing and All-in-One. Its Support Free Forever tier lists two support seats, a team inbox, live chat, conversation history, notifications, saved replies, office-hours management, meetings integration and mobile apps. Marketing Free offers 200 contacts with forms, segments, basic broadcasts and tracking.

Support Professional currently lists $29 per month for five support seats. It extends Free with email forwarding, supported social channel integrations, a public knowledge base, automatic chat triggers, a lead-qualification bot, transcripts, satisfaction ratings and Zapier. The value is particularly visible when several agents answer chats, because the published package includes five support seats rather than charging the same base fee per person.

Marketing Professional lists $19 per month for 1,000 contacts. It extends the basic contact/broadcast layer with automation, drip campaigns, conditional content, custom email domains and a visual email builder. If a team buys Support Professional and Marketing Professional separately at their respective starting prices, $29 plus $19 is $48; the All-in-One Professional offer also lists $48 at the 1,000-contact, five-support-seat baseline.

Premium marketing and support rates are displayed as special offers beside higher comparison prices. The observed Support Premium promotional entry is $99/month and the All-in-One Premium promotion $128/month, with much higher crossed-out references on the site. These figures are conditional, time-sensitive vendor display prices rather than reliable lifetime prices. Verify which tier, number of contacts, promotion expiry, annual discount and renewal amount apply in the real checkout.

What Gist means by support seats versus contacts

A support seat is an account allowed to respond to customer support queries in Gist. Support Free includes two; Support Professional includes five; the current Premium promotional offer advertises unlimited support seats. Gist also says additional non-support users can access other parts of the platform without needing the same support seat. This distinction matters when marketing staff need customer data but do not answer live chats.

A marketing contact is an email address held in the Gist database. The Free marketing offer is limited to 200 contacts and the displayed Professional entry includes 1,000, with different contact counts changing pricing. A company with 20,000 email subscribers should not assume it can buy the $48 starting All-in-One offer at unchanged cost.

For a fair proposal, count paid support-seat users, total known contacts, broadcast and automation requirements, any AI-bot charges, promotional expiry, and future database growth. Request a configured checkout screenshot rather than estimating a contract from a single price badge.

LiveChat legacy pricing: charges follow active agents

LiveChat’s established Help Center lists Starter at $19, Team at $49 and Business at $79 per active agent per month when billed annually, with Enterprise custom-priced. Toollers’ existing pricing article also records monthly-billing rates of $25, $59 and $89 respectively. These should be read as legacy LiveChat plan figures, not prices for Text’s Essential and Growth plans.

The vendor’s pay-per-agent guidance makes the licensing rule unusually clear: a user with an active agent account can count toward billing even if the agent is logged out. Owners and admins can count if their accounts have relevant agent access. Inactive agents should be suspended and the subscription updated if they no longer need access.

The role-sensitive model means a 12-agent operation can be significantly more expensive than a two-agent operation even if conversation volume is unchanged. Other products such as HelpDesk.com, ChatBot.com, selected Marketplace apps or external messaging services may have independent subscriptions and usage charges. Do not assume they are included merely because they belong to the same vendor family.

New Text pricing for buyers starting now

On the current livechat.com pricing page, Text Essential costs $19 per user per month billed annually or $25 when billed monthly. It includes one AI Agent, ten AI resolutions monthly, five reply suggestions per user, a shared inbox, ticketing, up to three proactive campaigns, 50 live visitors tracked and 10,000 API calls. The vendor advertises a 14-day trial without a credit card.

Text Growth costs $79 per user per month billed annually or $99 monthly. It includes ten AI Agents, 200 AI resolutions per month, fifty reply suggestions per user, chat supervision, unlimited chat history, advanced reports, thirty proactive campaigns and 20,000 API calls. Enterprise is negotiated according to required security, integration and service commitments.

Additional packages of 50 AI resolutions are advertised at $49.50, and extra blocks of 100,000 API calls at $29.50. An AI resolution means the AI successfully handles a customer question according to the vendor’s counting rules. These quotas are not directly comparable with Gist contacts, chat seats or email volume; nor can they be transferred onto a legacy LiveChat account.

Price examples for solo, three-agent and five-agent teams

Consider three people who need ordinary human chat. Gist Support Professional lists $29 per month total with five included support seats. Established LiveChat Starter at $19 per agent per month on annual billing costs 3 × $19 = $57 per month equivalent, or $684 for twelve months. LiveChat Team would be $147 per month equivalent, or $1,764 annually. The comparison is only for published base software: each product has different features and Gist may also need Premium for particular routing or reporting features.

For five agents, Gist Support Professional stays at its $29/month starting package if no other limits apply. Legacy LiveChat Starter is 5 × $19 = $95/month annual equivalent ($1,140 a year); Team becomes 5 × $49 = $245/month equivalent ($2,940 a year), while Business becomes $395/month equivalent ($4,740 a year). The bigger the support team, the more important the seat-metering difference becomes.

For one agent, LiveChat Starter is $19/month annual equivalent, which is below Gist Support Professional at $29, although Gist Support Free may suffice for the most basic requirements. But Gist may replace a separate $19-plus marketing tool; only the buyer can tell whether all-in-one savings are real after evaluating feature depth, migration effort, brand fit and contact growth.

A separate new-Text example illustrates why the identity distinction matters: three Text Growth users cost 3 × $79 = $237 per month annual equivalent before extras, while legacy LiveChat Team for three agents is 3 × $49 = $147. Text Growth has integrated AI entitlements that legacy LiveChat Team does not automatically include, so it is not a like-for-like upgrade solely based on seat price.

Live chat widget quality and visitor engagement

Both platforms offer website chat interfaces and teams able to respond in real time. Gist embeds its messenger into a broader customer journey and supports welcome messages, stored contact context, forms and meeting bookings. Businesses that use on-site messaging primarily to discover leads can find that unified view useful.

LiveChat is purpose-built for the chat interaction itself, with visitor engagement, canned responses, agent status, targeted campaigns and integrations. It is a sensible choice for stores where live-agent conversations are a revenue or customer-satisfaction channel in their own right.

Widget quality should be tested on the actual site, not judged from screenshots. Check mobile load time, keyboard accessibility, responsive design, consent behavior, page performance, handoff after office hours and whether returning visitors retain the right conversation context.

Inbox, routing and team collaboration

Gist offers a shared inbox and support seats, with saved replies, private notes, visitor profiles, tags, office hours and inbox management. Professional adds richer inbound channels, while Premium advertises automated assignment rules, roles and permissions, real-time message sneak peeks, statistics and additional customer-support automation.

Legacy LiveChat is built around staffing, availability, chat queues and assignment. Teams can monitor incoming conversations, assign chats and supervise performance according to plan. Its established Team and Business tiers progressively unlock more reporting and management functionality than Starter.

At minimum, test reassignment, missed-chat follow-ups, after-hours routing, multiple brands, language support, permission boundaries, notes and concurrent use. The cheapest tier may be sufficient for two founders but inadequate for a support operation with several shifts and escalation groups.

A critical support difference: tickets and help desk products

LiveChat’s historical native ticketing has a sunset history: official documentation says legacy native Tickets ended by January 2025 for all established plan categories, with HelpDesk.com as the alternative. Consequently, an older review that claims a current LiveChat Starter plan includes unrestricted native ticketing is unreliable without product-specific confirmation.

By contrast, the new Text offer explicitly includes inbox and ticketing in its Essential and Growth plans. That is another feature of the new Text platform, not an automatic upgrade to an established LiveChat account.

Gist includes team-inbox, customer-conversation and knowledge-base workflows, though buyers with formal ticket SLAs, SLA breach rules, complex audit logs or enterprise IT service-management needs should assess whether its support architecture is sufficient. Neither should be called a full ITSM replacement based solely on a chat or inbox feature.

Knowledge base and self-service help

Gist Support Professional lists a public knowledge base and the ability to share articles inside conversations. Its Help Center documentation covers articles, collections, branding, custom domains and languages. That makes it easier to publish self-service answers in the same platform that manages customer communication.

For established LiveChat, extensive self-service and ticket operations may involve HelpDesk.com, ChatBot.com or other Marketplace tools rather than an identical all-in-one Gist bundle. Buyers should price and test these products separately.

The most important operational measure is not how many knowledge-base articles the system can hold. Test whether customers can find the right answer, how agents reuse articles, how content ownership works and whether old or inaccurate articles can be removed promptly.

Chatbots and AI: Emma versus LiveChat-family products

Gist documents Emma, an AI support bot that uses knowledge-base or external content to answer questions and escalates difficult cases to humans. The documentation also describes Custom Answers and a handoff path. Its Support Premium page lists custom chatbots and a Support Bot add-on. This supports a claim that Gist has AI support features—but not that an unlimited AI bot is free on the $29 Professional plan.

For the established LiveChat product, automation and human reply-assistance depend on the subscription and connected services. ChatBot.com is a separate vendor-family product and must not silently be counted as part of a LiveChat Starter subscription. LiveChat Help Center material also distinguishes the legacy live chat workflow from integrated HelpDesk.com.

Text, the newer product, is different: it lists built-in AI Agents, AI Copilot, AI resolutions and add-on blocks at specific Essential and Growth tiers. Choose based on which product the checkout actually sells and measure successful resolutions, hallucination handling, safety escalations, data-source quality and human takeover in a supervised trial.

Can either AI assistant be trusted to handle every customer question?

No. Vendor pages describe AI assistance, but successful automation depends on support-article quality, supported languages, integration permissions, actual customer wording and the consequences of a wrong answer. An AI agent should not be allowed to invent refund eligibility, payment status or access rights.

Build a test set with real anonymized questions: simple FAQs, contradictory policy pages, product compatibility, urgent billing issues, angry customers, refund requests and requests involving personal data. Measure the percentage resolved correctly with an appropriate source, how quickly staff take over and whether responses require rework.

For Gist, confirm Emma’s actual entitlements and add-on charges. For Text, confirm resolutions included by tier, overage blocks and any differences between testing and production. For legacy LiveChat, confirm the exact AI or ChatBot subscriptions rather than assuming a bundled allowance.

Email marketing and drip campaigns: Gist leads

Gist Marketing Professional supports a visual email builder, drip sequences, conditional content, custom templates and domains, auto-resend rules and subscriber controls. Premium extends the workflow approach with multi-step visual automations, event triggers, abandoned cart sequences and deeper reporting. This gives an operator a way to connect customer behavior with structured email follow-up.

LiveChat can capture leads and send conversation-related information to external CRM or email marketing tools, but the classic chat subscription is not a replacement for a lifecycle email service. A business needing broadcasts, segmentation and nurture sequences would generally use another platform alongside LiveChat.

If email-driven growth is an important purchase criterion, ask whether Gist’s sender reputation, consent controls, deliverability, templates and list segmentation meet requirements before consolidating. A smaller price does not help if a specialist email service performs materially better for the company’s mailing strategy.

Forms, popups and lead generation

Gist provides web forms, popup campaigns, contact records and website/event tracking. Marketers can capture a lead, tag it, place it into a segment and trigger a follow-up sequence. The shared marketing and support environment becomes particularly useful when a prospect transitions from browsing content to requesting a product demo.

LiveChat’s lead generation is more conversation-centric: start a chat, collect customer information and qualify interest. Integrations can send resulting data to a sales CRM or marketing platform, but they are separate systems unless the buyer configures the appropriate connection.

Compare the journey from first visit to booked meeting: missed chat, email confirmation, lead qualification, CRM ownership, opt-in proof and follow-up. Attribution should be tested using tagged campaigns; neither vendor should be credited with more conversions solely because it supports proactive engagement.

Meetings, onboarding, surveys and product tours

Gist documents meetings and scheduling in its support/product family. Premium also lists tours, surveys, live view and additional in-app messaging. For a SaaS company launching onboarding campaigns, this breadth can reduce the need to subscribe to separate meeting, survey and adoption tools.

LiveChat can link to a calendar and integrate with specialized applications, but its core product is not a complete native onboarding and product-tour suite. If those workflows matter, include subscription costs and setup time for the corresponding third-party services.

Gist’s wider footprint brings its own risk: several mediocre integrated features may be less valuable than fewer excellent specialist tools. Demonstrate two or three complete journeys rather than accepting a checklist of supported modules as proof of fit.

Ecommerce and Shopify or WooCommerce use cases

Gist offers ecommerce-related integrations including WooCommerce, Stripe and other contact/transaction sources. Teams can apply segmentation and messaging based on available purchase or behavioral data, subject to correct event mapping and plan rights. Premium marketing promotes abandoned-cart sequences.

LiveChat has historically served ecommerce teams through a mature chat interface and store integrations. Agent operators often care about order status, visitor context, product recommendations and chat-driven sales reporting. The newer Text product particularly highlights Shopify catalog access and AI-agent commerce features, but these cannot be presumed in the older LiveChat subscriptions.

To choose, trace one real Shopify or WooCommerce purchase from visitor question through chat, follow-up, order lookup, refund or return request and customer satisfaction. Include integration costs, data privacy, permissions and how reliably the tool identifies the correct order.

Analytics and reporting: ask the right question

Gist combines marketing campaign measurements with support-conversation metrics, with advanced support reporting listed on Premium and email analytics in paid Marketing plans. This can help management connect growth activity, behavior and subsequent support conversations under the same contact history.

Established LiveChat’s reports focus on chat volume, missed chats, staffing, satisfaction, goals and related operational outcomes. Its Help Center specifically places much of the reporting suite in Team, Business and Enterprise rather than Starter. The newer Text product advertises further AI Agent and ecommerce reporting by plan.

Before ranking reporting quality, decide what is necessary: first reply time, median resolution time, queue abandonment, satisfaction, sales influenced by chat, newsletter conversion or agent utilization. Test exportability, metric definitions and whether historical data will still be accessible after a plan change.

Integrations, API and extensibility

Gist advertises app connections including Zapier, WordPress, Segment, WooCommerce and Stripe; its platform also references APIs and webhooks. These are useful when funnel submissions, ecommerce data and support conversations need to share context with the rest of a company’s systems.

LiveChat has a large integration ecosystem and developer APIs. For organizations already using a heavyweight CRM, data warehouse or ecommerce stack, a specialist chat platform with strong integrations can be a better organizational fit than moving marketing and support data into another all-in-one system.

Integration labels do not guarantee parity. Confirm which direction data flows, which fields are mapped, how duplicate contacts are handled, whether chats transfer with historical context, API limits, authentication, retries and ownership of custom integration code. Text and legacy LiveChat have different current API allowances, another reason to verify the purchased product.

Security, access rights and privacy

The systems handle personal customer communications and may collect email addresses, browsing activity and sales records. Security review should therefore cover data processing agreements, user roles, SSO if needed, retention and deletion, export, encryption, incident response and where data is processed.

Gist’s product materials and the existing Toollers profile describe a range of encryption, permission and GDPR-related controls. That is not equivalent to independently verifying a current SOC 2 or ISO certificate for the exact application and contract. LiveChat and Text likewise publish product-specific security and enterprise administration options, which should not be transferred from one product to another without checking.

For regulated industries or sensitive customer information, request official compliance evidence, legal terms and audit materials, and restrict live chat from collecting payment card details, passwords or health information unless a properly assessed secure workflow exists.

What is easier for a founder or a tiny business?

A founder answering a few website questions per day may start with Gist Support Free, particularly if its two included seats, saved replies and simple messenger cover the use case. If the business already uses a separate email platform, there may be no reason to upgrade to All-in-One immediately.

LiveChat’s Starter plan can also be sensible for a one-agent business that prioritizes a dedicated paid chat tool, but the paid plan must be justified against Gist’s available free tier. A company signing up now also has to check whether it is being offered the newer Text Essential product instead of legacy Starter.

Keep the setup limited: install a widget, test mobile visibility, write ten saved answers, define support availability and track response quality. Adding AI or marketing automation before these basics work often increases rather than reduces management load.

What is better for a growing customer-support team?

For several agents who mainly answer chats, LiveChat’s dedicated management model and reporting can be valuable. Shift leaders may prefer the focus and controls of a mature standalone chat application, especially when sales, CRM and email already operate in separate systems.

However, Gist’s fixed support-seat bundles can change the economics. A team of five has a substantially lower publicly listed base fee on Gist Support Professional than on five paid LiveChat Team seats. The comparison is not complete until the team checks whether it needs Gist Premium’s reporting and routing functions.

If AI is a primary reason for switching, include Text Growth as a separate option and compare its $79/user annual subscription, included 200 monthly AI resolutions and overage rates against the Gist support and add-on configuration.

What is better for SaaS onboarding and retention?

Gist is naturally aligned with SaaS lifecycle use cases: identify a user, send onboarding email, show a product tour, capture survey feedback, invite a meeting and keep chat context tied to the contact. Those are recurring activities throughout activation and retention rather than one-off support events.

LiveChat can excel at real-time support for trial users but typically needs integrations for broad behavioral email nurture, product tours, surveys and lifecycle segmentation. If those external services already function well, switching entirely to Gist could introduce unnecessary migration costs.

Test an actual sequence for a new signup, an inactive trial user and a customer asking to cancel. Evaluate the automation trigger, delivery timing, agent handoff, suppression logic and analytics rather than the number of features checked.

What is better for ecommerce sales and support?

Choose the dedicated LiveChat/Text route if your core requirement is rapid customer conversations about products, orders, checkout and shipment, and you value specialized ecommerce chat tools and agent supervision. For new buyers, Text’s Shopify integration and AI sales functions may be especially relevant, subject to plan entitlements.

Choose Gist if the store wants the same customer platform to support chat, segments, newsletters, forms, abandoned-cart workflows and follow-up campaigns. It can be particularly attractive when the company wants to consolidate several applications and manage customer lifecycle data together.

In either case, check whether the automation and ecommerce connectors expose return status, fulfillment notes and refunds correctly. Verify any card, messaging, email delivery and integration charges, then evaluate support workload after launch.

Should an agency use either system?

An agency maintaining several brands or clients should evaluate account isolation, number of websites, domain branding, user permissions, billing ownership and whether one customer’s data can be seen by another. Gist offers multi-site and team tools but is not necessarily a white-label multi-client agency operating platform at every tier.

LiveChat can be a good front-line widget for a client site, especially where the agency trains a team to answer live messages. The new Text Enterprise offer markets custom integrations and white-label options, but such enterprise features require a quote and are distinct from legacy LiveChat Starter.

If an agency needs CRM, funnel building, client sub-accounts, payments and campaigns all in a single system, consider whether a dedicated agency platform—not either chat-focused choice—is the more suitable foundation.

How do migration and switching costs compare?

Switching from LiveChat to Gist may mean exporting chat transcripts, mapping user identities, recreating canned replies and routing rules, connecting email accounts, importing contacts, setting up a knowledge base and deciding whether to move lifecycle email campaigns. That larger scope can make consolidation financially attractive but operationally disruptive.

Switching from Gist to legacy LiveChat or Text may simplify the chat desk while requiring alternatives for marketing, forms, email automations and tours. A partial migration can be safer than a wholesale migration if the existing marketing system is working well.

Run both widgets only in a controlled staging or limited-traffic environment where possible. Use a sample export to verify transcript ownership, timestamps, contact matching, data minimization, redirects and the removal of duplicate tracking scripts before a full cutover.

Cost of ownership: what the subscription misses

The correct 12-month budget includes plan fees, relevant agents or support seats, contact growth, AI credits, bot add-ons, help-desk licensing, email sending, third-party connectors, setup, data migration and internal administration. A cheap all-in-one application can cost more than a specialist chat tool if the bundled modules require substantial workarounds.

For Gist, the largest uncertainty is often contact growth, Premium promotional renewals and AI add-ons. For the established LiveChat platform, agent count and related applications are central. For Text, users, AI-resolution overages and API packages can matter as much as the advertised per-seat rate.

When comparing offers, use the same currency, billing period, number of full agents and scope of capabilities. Mark every quote as either stable public list price, promotion or sales proposal, and avoid multiplying a discounted first month by twelve.

      A 30-day evaluation plan

In week one, write down five customer journeys and make an inventory of existing help-desk, email, CRM, ecommerce, calendar and analytics tools. Count active support users and marketing contacts, and identify which workflows each vendor would replace. Ensure any evaluation account uses the exact plan family under consideration.

In week two, install the widget in staging, connect one realistic data source, and test common questions, missed-chat handling, mobile performance, contact profiles, consent, reporting and knowledge-base retrieval. If testing AI, compare correct resolution and human escalation using the same anonymized questions.

In week three, have operators run real but non-sensitive workflows: live handoffs, refunds that require a human, sales qualification, newsletter opt-ins and booking. Review five representative transcripts, check event logs and see if the dashboard makes staffing decisions easier.

In week four, collect written price quotes with seat counts, contact counts, any AI overages and renewal terms. Reconcile which systems can truly be canceled after migration and assign an owner for workflow upkeep. Select the provider that solves the actual work at a sustainable total cost.

      Final recommendation

Gist is our default pick for a small or midsize business trying to unify customer conversations with email marketing, forms, contacts, automation and onboarding. The ability to begin with a two-seat free chat tier and move into a five-seat Professional support bundle is also compelling from a published price perspective. But promotional Premium pricing, contact growth and advanced-bot entitlements require careful verification.

Established LiveChat remains attractive for a team whose main job is handling live conversations and which already has the surrounding marketing and CRM stack. Its mature workflow and agent-first licensing are easier to map to a dedicated support desk, although seats and add-on products can increase cost rapidly.

For a buyer starting from scratch in late 2026, a third decision exists: evaluate the vendor’s new Text product with its bundled AI and ticketing. Do not treat Text as a free upgrade to LiveChat or compare its AI-resolution quotas against Gist contact limits. The right answer comes from a realistic workflow trial, a clearly identified product and a complete quote.

      How we researched this comparison

      Testing methodology

This is an editorial desk-research comparison checked October 24, 2026 against current accessible official Gist pricing and documentation, LiveChat historical plan guidance and pricing model documentation, current Text livechat.com pricing with its explicit separate-product disclosures, and the published Toollers profiles plus six related article URLs. Price scenarios are transparent multiplication of public rates, not negotiated quotes. Gist Premium display prices are promotions, not guaranteed renewal prices. Legacy LiveChat Starter/Team/Business and new Text Essential/Growth are different product subscriptions and are not combined. We did not operate paid accounts, conduct a controlled chatbot benchmark, measure response times, independently certify security compliance or verify a checkout for every country. Readers should validate taxes, contract terms, seats, contact volumes, bots, AI-resolution rules and migration before purchasing.

      Frequently asked questions

      Is Gist better than LiveChat?
Gist is generally better when a business wants live chat, customer data, knowledge base, lead forms, email marketing and automation together. Established LiveChat is a stronger fit when the main need is a specialized human-agent chat desk integrated with an existing CRM and marketing stack.
Does Gist offer a permanently free plan?
Yes. Gist Support Free Forever includes two support seats and basic live chat, team inbox and conversation tools. Gist Marketing Free also lists a 200-contact limit. More advanced support and email features require paid plans.
How much does Gist Support Professional cost?
The published Gist Support Professional entry is $29 per month with five support seats. All-in-One Professional starts at $48 per month for five support seats and 1,000 marketing contacts; higher contact volumes and Premium features may change the actual cost.
What does LiveChat cost per agent?
The established LiveChat Help Center lists Starter at $19, Team at $49 and Business at $79 per active agent per month billed annually, with Enterprise custom-priced. Monthly terms and current subscription eligibility need checkout confirmation. The new Text plans are separate.
What is the difference between LiveChat and Text?
Text is a newer live-chat and AI-agent product marketed on livechat.com. Text Essential and Growth include specific AI-resolution entitlements and ticketing. The vendor says legacy LiveChat customers keep their existing plans and do not automatically receive Text-specific features.
Does LiveChat include a free plan?
The established LiveChat subscription does not advertise a permanent free plan; its vendor documentation describes a 14-day trial. The newer Text offer also advertises a 14-day trial without a credit card. Gist provides an ongoing Free Forever support tier.
      Does Gist have AI chatbots?
Yes. Gist documentation describes the Emma AI support bot, knowledge-source answers, custom responses and human handoff. Custom bots and a support-bot add-on are also advertised. Confirm AI availability, request allowances and charges for the chosen plan.
Is an AI Agent included with LiveChat Starter?
Do not assume that. New Text Essential includes one AI Agent and ten AI resolutions per month, but Text is separate from legacy LiveChat Starter. The vendor explicitly states Text entitlements are not included in existing LiveChat plans.
Which is better for email marketing?
Gist. Its Marketing product has broadcasts, drip campaigns, segmentation and tier-dependent multi-step automations. Established LiveChat is primarily a conversation tool and typically needs an email service or CRM integration for similar lifecycle campaigns.
Which is cheaper for five support agents?
At published starting prices, Gist Support Professional is $29 per month including five seats, versus five established LiveChat Starter licenses at $95 monthly equivalent when billed annually. However, the products have different features, and Gist Premium may be needed for advanced routing or reporting.
Does LiveChat include a native help desk?
The older LiveChat native Tickets feature was sunset by January 2025 according to official documentation; HelpDesk.com is a separate product. The new Text Essential and Growth offers do include inbox and ticketing, but those are different subscriptions.
Can Gist replace a CRM and marketing automation platform?
Gist includes customer contacts, segments, email marketing, workflows, meetings, forms and chat. It can replace some standalone tools for smaller businesses, but a complex CRM, ecommerce workflow or advanced marketing stack may still require specialist applications and careful migration.
