The current UK Sage Accounting product covers invoicing, bank reconciliation, cash flow, VAT/MTD, payroll, Sage Copilot, supplier/CIS workflows, custom reporting, receipt/invoice capture, budgets, inventory and multi-currency across Start, Standard and Plus.

Usability and implementation4.1

Capterra currently rates Sage Accounting 4.1/5 from 652 reviews with 4.1 ease and 3.8 customer service. G2's 4.2/5, 73-review Sage Business Cloud Accounting profile represents the retired US edition rather than the current UK product, so it is retained only as legacy product-family evidence. Current review themes praise straightforward bookkeeping and reporting but cite support, UI and automation limitations.

Pricing and value transparency4.8

Current UK Sage Accounting pricing is transparent at £20 Start, £43 Standard and £59 Plus per month excluding VAT, with a one-month free-trial option and no long-term contract. Sage also runs a 90%-off six-month promotion, which Toollers excludes from the stable starting price.

Integrations, security and trust4.8

Sage Accounting integrates through Sage Marketplace, including Stripe, AutoEntry, A2X and Zapier, with Zapier offering access to 4,000+ apps. Sage states that cloud-based accounting SaaS within Sage Business Cloud is ISO 27001 certified and documents encryption, 24/7 threat monitoring, penetration testing, backups/disaster recovery and GDPR/CCPA compliance.

Sage Accounting is Sage's active UK cloud accounting product for sole traders and small businesses, combining bookkeeping, invoicing, VAT/MTD, payroll, Sage Copilot and reporting.

Quick verdict

Sage Accounting is a strong UK-focused accounting option for small businesses that want bookkeeping, VAT/MTD, payroll and Sage Copilot in one subscription. Regular prices are £20 Start, £43 Standard and £59 Plus per month excluding VAT. Standard is Most Popular; Plus adds unlimited users, inventory and multi-currency. The biggest cautions are weaker customer-service sentiment, usage charges for extra captures and the need to distinguish this active UK product from the retired US Sage Business Cloud Accounting edition.

What is Sage Accounting?

Sage Accounting is Sage's active UK cloud accounting product for sole traders and small businesses. It combines invoicing, bank reconciliation, cash-flow tools, VAT and Making Tax Digital workflows, payroll, Sage Copilot and business reporting in one subscription.

The current product should not be confused with the old U.S. Sage Business Cloud Accounting service. Sage retired the U.S. edition at the end of 2024 with access and support ending in January 2025, while the active UK Sage Accounting product continues with Start, Standard and Plus plans.

How we researched Sage Accounting

This is a research-based review rather than a Toollers hands-on bookkeeping implementation. On October 9, 2026, we refreshed Sage's live UK accounting page, plan comparison, free-trial information, cancellation documentation, Trust and Security materials, Marketplace references and current Capterra evidence.

Vendor performance claims are presented as Sage claims unless independently supported.

Start plan

Start has a regular price of £20 per month excluding 20% VAT. It supports one accounting user and is positioned for VAT-registered sole traders and small businesses that are just getting started.

The plan includes unlimited sales invoices, bank reconciliation, VAT and MTD workflows, cash-flow management, Sage Copilot and payroll for one employee. It does not include the receipt and invoice capture allowance available on Standard and Plus.

Standard plan

Standard costs £43 per month excluding VAT and supports three users. Sage currently labels it Most Popular.

It adds supplier management, CIS, accrual accounting, custom reports, quotes and estimates, cash-flow forecasting and 30 included receipt or invoice capture credits. It also keeps payroll and Sage Copilot in the subscription.

Plus plan

Plus costs £59 per month excluding VAT and supports unlimited accounting users.

It adds budgets, multi-currency banking and invoicing, exchange-rate management, stock and inventory management and 100 included receipt or invoice capture credits. It is the most relevant tier for product businesses or teams with international transactions.

Current promotion

Sage is currently offering 90% off the first six months, reducing Start to £2, Standard to £4.30 and Plus to £5.90 per month before VAT during the promotional period.

Toollers does not use those temporary prices as the stable starting price because the plans return to £20, £43 and £59 afterward. Buyers should compare the promotional first six months separately from steady-state cost.

30-day free trial

Sage also lets buyers skip the promotional discount and use a 30-day free trial of Start, Standard or Plus.

The trial is more useful when a business needs to test bank feeds, VAT workflows, payroll, reporting or data migration before committing. The promotion is more useful when the product choice has already been made.

Payroll

Payroll is now built into the current Sage Accounting plans. Start and Standard include payroll for one employee, while Plus includes five employees.

Additional employees currently cost £1.85 each per month. That means payroll is included at the platform level but not unlimited, so employers should model headcount rather than treating payroll as completely free.

Payroll workflow

Sage describes payroll as connected directly with accounting so pay runs can update financial records without manual rekeying.

The platform also supports PAYE calculations, HMRC compliance, pension auto-enrolment, payslips, anomaly spotting and employee self-service. Buyers should verify the exact HR and payroll functions needed because some advanced people-management capabilities can differ by configuration.

Sage Copilot

Sage Copilot is included in all three current plans and is positioned as an AI productivity assistant for accounting and payroll.

It can support reminders, invoice follow-up drafts, VAT task prompts, unusual-pay detection, business insights and communication templates. Toollers has not independently measured Sage's advertised time-saving or payment-speed claims.

Invoicing and getting paid

All three plans support unlimited sales invoices, invoice tracking and customer payment workflows.

Sage also promotes automatic invoice chasing and multiple ways to get paid. This gives Start meaningful invoicing breadth even before a business upgrades to supplier, CIS or advanced reporting functions.

Bank reconciliation

Bank reconciliation is included from Start, helping businesses match transactions to invoices and keep books current.

Capterra reviews often describe everyday bookkeeping as straightforward, although some users report bank-connection or workflow friction. Businesses should test their actual bank during the trial.

VAT and Making Tax Digital

Sage Accounting is built around UK tax workflows, including VAT calculation, assisted VAT submissions and Making Tax Digital support.

This regional focus is one of the main reasons the active UK product should be evaluated separately from historical U.S. Sage Business Cloud Accounting reviews and pricing.

CIS and suppliers

Standard and Plus add supplier management and CIS workflows for businesses that need contractor and construction-related accounting support.

For UK firms working with subcontractors, this can make Standard materially more useful than Start even when user count is not the main issue.

Cash-flow forecasting

Standard and Plus add more advanced cash-flow forecasting and business insight features.

Sage Copilot also surfaces trends, risks and opportunities from accounting and payroll data. Forecast quality still depends on complete books and realistic assumptions.

Receipt and invoice capture

Start does not include the receipt or invoice capture allowance shown for higher tiers. Standard includes 30 approved captures and Plus includes 100.

Additional approved captures currently cost £0.20 each. High-volume businesses should include this usage charge in TCO instead of assuming document capture is unlimited.

Custom reporting

Standard and Plus add custom reports, while Plus extends planning with budgets and more international functionality.

Capterra users often praise Sage reporting, although some reviewers find specific reporting or customization workflows less flexible than they would like.

Inventory and stock

Inventory and stock management are included on Plus.

The current Plus plan covers a meaningful small-business inventory use case, but businesses with advanced warehousing, manufacturing or complex ecommerce operations should compare specialist inventory systems or larger Sage products.

Multi-currency

Plus includes multi-currency banking and invoicing plus exchange-rate management.

Businesses that routinely trade internationally therefore need the £59 monthly regular tier, which is an important pricing breakpoint.

Unlimited users on Plus

Plus supports unlimited accounting users, while Start supports one and Standard three.

That can make Plus more attractive for collaborative teams even before inventory becomes essential, particularly when accountants, finance staff and operations users all need access.

Marketplace and integrations

Sage Accounting can be extended through the Sage Marketplace. Sage highlights partners such as Stripe, AutoEntry and A2X, while Zapier can connect Sage Accounting with more than 4,000 apps.

Third-party subscriptions, Zapier task limits and connector-specific restrictions can add cost, so integration count should not be treated as the same thing as included functionality.

Data migration

Sage states that businesses can import chart of accounts, contacts, services and bank statements using templates and migration support.

The current product page also promotes MoveMyBooks for transferring historical data from supported accounting systems, including up to two years of transaction history in qualifying scenarios.

Security

Sage states that the secure development and operations of cloud-based accounting and other SaaS in Sage Business Cloud are certified to ISO 27001.

Sage also documents a SOC 2 programme, PCI DSS Level 1 compliance, GDPR and CCPA controls, least-privilege access principles, encryption requirements, monitoring and cloud hosting controls.

Cancellation

Sage Accounting can be cancelled through subscription management and the current product page states there are no long-term contracts or commitments.

Sage says the subscription remains active until the next billing date with no further payment when cancellation is completed at least five working days before that date. Access to data through the Sage solution ends after subscription expiry.

Refund policy

Sage's public UK Accounting pages emphasize monthly billing, promotions, free trials and cancellation rather than one universal money-back guarantee for every Accounting subscription.

Refund rights therefore depend on the relevant Sage product and service terms, purchase channel and applicable law. Buyers should use the free trial when evaluation risk matters.

Current Capterra evidence

Capterra currently rates Sage Accounting 4.1 out of 5 from 652 reviews, with ease of use at 4.1 and customer service at 3.8.

Positive themes include straightforward bookkeeping, reporting, cloud access and value. Critical themes include support frustration, manual workflows, user-interface issues and limitations compared with larger accounting systems.

Legacy G2 evidence

G2's Sage Business Cloud Accounting page shows 4.2 out of 5 from 73 reviews, but G2 explicitly states that the U.S. product was retired with access ending in January 2025.

Toollers therefore treats that G2 profile as legacy product-family evidence only and does not use it as current UK Sage Accounting review evidence.

Pros and cons

Sage Accounting's biggest strengths are clear UK pricing, built-in payroll, Sage Copilot across all plans, VAT/MTD support, a strong Standard tier and Plus features such as unlimited users, inventory and multi-currency.

Its main weaknesses are UK-specific positioning, weaker support sentiment, capture overage costs, inventory and multi-currency gating, extra per-employee payroll charges and a less modern feel in some user reviews.

Who should use Sage Accounting?

Sage Accounting is best for UK sole traders and small businesses that want accounting, VAT/MTD, payroll and AI assistance in one cloud subscription.

Standard is especially relevant for supplier/CIS and reporting needs, while Plus suits companies with inventory, multiple currencies or larger accounting teams.

Who should avoid Sage Accounting?

U.S. buyers looking for the retired Sage Business Cloud Accounting product should not treat this as the same service.

Businesses needing ERP-grade finance, advanced multi-entity consolidation, sophisticated warehouse management or global statutory accounting should consider larger systems.

Sage scores strongly for current pricing transparency, UK compliance fit, included payroll, security and core accounting, with deductions for customer-service sentiment and product-scope limitations.

Final verdict

Sage Accounting is a strong UK small-business accounting option when VAT, MTD and payroll need to work together and the business values Sage's established ecosystem.

Standard is the most balanced plan for many small firms, while Plus becomes compelling for inventory, multi-currency and unlimited-user needs.

Cons

  • Additional payroll employees cost extra
  • Capture overages cost £0.20 each
  • Inventory/multi-currency require Plus
  • Some users cite dated/manual workflows
  • No universal public subscription money-back guarantee
  • Old G2 profile is retired US edition

Who should use this

  • UK sole traders
  • UK small businesses
  • VAT/MTD-focused businesses
  • Teams wanting payroll and accounting together
  • Companies needing inventory or multi-currency on Plus

Who should avoid this

  • US buyers seeking retired Sage Business Cloud Accounting
  • Enterprises needing ERP-grade finance
  • Businesses requiring advanced warehousing
  • Global multi-entity accounting teams
  • Buyers requiring top-tier customer-service ratings

Expert tip

Use Standard as the default comparison point for a real UK small business. Start is intentionally lean, while Plus is justified when unlimited accounting users, inventory or multi-currency are actual requirements. Model payroll headcount and capture overages separately.
